When government agent Harry Hannan crosses the Texas border into Mexico to meet a contact, he finds that he has been set up, and his wife is murdered. Harry is so traumatized that he winds up in a sanitarium in Connecticut, and his department does not want him to return to work. Harry thinks that someone is trying to kill him, and when he receives a mysterious death threat in written in Hebrew, he tries to solve the mystery. He has only one person on his side, a quiet woman named Ellie who has moved into his New York apartment and has secrets of her own.
