Soon after his insufferably arrogant father (Alan Rickman) wins the Nobel Prize for chemistry, Barkley Michaelson (Bryan Greenberg) is kidnapped by Thaddeus James (Shawn Hatosy), a young genius who claims to be Barkley's illegitimate half-brother. Motivated not so much by money as revenge, Thaddeus tries to convince Barkley to help him carry out a multimillion-dollar extortion plot against their patriarch.
Tandis qu'il peine à terminer sa thèse sur le cannibalisme, Barkley Michaelson apprend que son père Eli recevra le prix Nobel de chimie. Il est convenu que le jeune homme accompagnera à Stockholm son patriarche arrogant et infidèle, ainsi que sa mère Sarah, spécialiste en médecine légale. Mais la veille du départ, Barkley passe la nuit chez une poétesse et artiste peintre avant d'être, le lendemain matin, brutalement kidnappé. Son ravisseur, un jeune mécanicien qui a plusieurs motifs d'en vouloir à Eli, exige une rançon de 2 millions de dollars, soit l'équivalent de la bourse versée au scientifique par la fondation Nobel. L'enquête est confiée au détective Max Mariner, qui en pince pour Sarah.
