    Acclaimed director Stephen Frears helms the film version of the admired novel that for years Sam Peckinpah tried to get made.     Après la guerre, Pete et son ami Big Boy reviennent à Hi-Lo, Nouveau-Mexique, où ils ont mené jusqu'au début des années quarante la vie traditionnelle des cow-boys et des petits fermiers. Leur monde a bien changé et le temps des petits exploitants est révolu. Refusant de travailler pour le plus grand propriétaire de la région, Jim Ed Love, ils s'associent à Hoover Young, qui leur offre une chance de préserver leur style de vie et leur indépendance. Mais Big Boy a une liaison avec Mona, la femme du régisseur de Jim Ed Love, que Pete convoitait en secret.
