The Three Musketeers (1973)

The Three Musketeers is a 1973 film based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It was directed by Richard Lester and written by George MacDonald Fraser. The film starring Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway and Richard Chamberlain. The movie adheres closely to the novel, but it also injects a fair amount of humour. It was shot by David Watkins, with an eye for period detail. The fight scenes were choreographed by master swordsman William Hobbs.

Plot: The young d'Artagnan arrives in Paris with dreams of becoming a king's musketeer. Quite unused to the city life he makes a number of silly mistakes. He comes into conflict with three men, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, each of whom challenges him to a duel. He finds out they are musketeers. Later, D'Artagnan helps them to defend themselves from the Cardinal's guards headed by Jussac, who've just arrived during the duel. He is invited to join them in their efforts to oppose Cardinal Richelieu, who wishes to increase his already considerable power over the king. He also juggles affairs with the charming Constance Bonancieux and the passionate Lady De Winter, a spy for the cardinal.

Meanwhile the Duke of Buckingham, former lover of the queen, turns up and asks for something in remembrance of her; she gives him her diamond necklace. The Cardinal learns of the incident and tells the king to ask his wife to wear the necklace at the ball, and he sends Milady to England for stealing the necklace. She manages to seduce the Duke and steals two diamonds. The Cardinal had set a trap for the musketeers to prevent them to bring the necklace back, but D'Artagnan succeeds in bringing it back from the Duke (who has incurred the loss of two diamonds) and thus saves the Queen from embarrassment.
