"Der Mann, der zuviel wusste" wurde von Alfred Hitchcock bereits 1934 in England verfilmt, dies ist sein eigenes Remake aus dem Jahr 1956 und dem Original an Aufwand deutlich überlegen. Die Story: auf einer Afrikareise werden James Stewart und Doris Day zu Augenzeugen eines Mordes und erfahren von einem geplanten Attentat in London. Um beide zum Schweigen zu bringen, entführen die Attentäter den Sohn der Urlauber…
"Der Mann, der zuviel wusste" besticht durch seine außergewöhnlichen Schauplätze und einige unglaublich spannende Passagen. Die Charaktere sind komplexer als in vergleichbaren Thrillern (die Ehe von Stewart und Day ist keinesfalls so heil, wie sie den anderen Figuren vorgespielt wird, was zur Zeit seiner Entstehung sehr ungewöhnlich war und auch heute noch fesselt), und neben Bernard Herrmanns gewohnt genialem Score singt Doris Day hier erstmals ihren Klassiker "Que Sera, Sera", der nicht nur Dekoration bleibt, sondern entscheidend zur Handlung beiträgt. Der Song bekam einen Oscar und wurde ursprünglich von Doris Day als "albernes Kinderlied" bezeichnet. Er wurde ihr Markenzeichen und ist inzwischen unsterblich. Das Finale in der Royal Albert Hall, in der Doris Day verzweifelt versucht, das nahende Attentat zu verhindern, ist eine musikalische und schnitt-technische Meisterleistung, eine Sternstunde der Filmgeschichte.
