ZDF-History ist eine wöchentliche Fernsehsendung, die seit dem 29. Oktober 2000 am späten Sonntag Abend im ZDF ausgestrahlt wird. Schwerpunkte der Sendung sind Zeitgeschichte und Geschichte. Prägender Moderator der Sendung ist Guido Knopp, der Leiter der ZDF-Redaktion Zeitgeschichte, der die Reihe gemeinsam mit Christian Deick leitet.

In den Legenden der modernen Zeit, spielen die Jagd- und Kampffliegerpiloten der Luftstreitkräfte eine bedeutende Rolle. Die “Ritter der Lüfte” wie sie auch genannt wurden, fochten über den Wolken einen Kampf in dem fast immer der Bessere eine reelle Siegchance hatte. Schon im 1. Weltkrieg ließen große Jagdflieger wie Manfred von Richthofen oder Oswald Boelke die Welt durch ihre herausragenden fliegerischen Leistungen aufhorchen. Im 2. Weltkrieg war Erich Hartmann mit 352 Abschüssen das “AS der Asse” Galland, Mölders, Nowotny und Marseille, sowie der Japaner Saburo Sakai gehörten zu den großen Jagdfliegern ihrer Zeit. Für den Jägerpiloten ist der Luftkampf immer eine Herausforderung gewesen. Der Gewinner überlebt ihn, während der Verlierer zumeist den Tod findet oder zumindest seine Maschine verliert. Es war ein Spiel auf Leben und Tod.
