In Gansu Province, northwest China, lie the remains of countless prinosers abandoned in the Gobi desert sixty years ago. Designated as “ultra-rightists” in the Communist Party’s Anti-Rightist campaing of 1957, they starved to dead in the Jiabiangou and Mingshui reeducation camps. The film invites us to meet the survivors of the camp to find out firsthand who these persons were, the hardships they were forced to endure and what became their destiny.
Wang Bing's film redefine what documentaries are all about. His long and thorough examination of people's stories and people's lives offers a unique new approach to the bond cinema should be forming with the viewer. Dead Souls is a film about lacking, about keeping memory alive against all odds. Highly recommended.
