Getting Off the Boat at Her Island is a contemplative drama about homecoming and the passage of time. Twenty-five-year-old Kuriko returns to her childhood island home after two years in Tokyo, preparing for marriage and seeking closure before leaving her past behind forever. What should be a nostalgic reunion becomes unexpectedly complex when her own father fails to recognize her, highlighting how much she has transformed into a city dweller.

As Kuriko reconnects with her efficient and cheerful mother and encounters a burly fisherman who still harbors feelings for her, she embarks on a journey to find a close friend from her teenage years. The discovery that this friend has died forces her to confront the weight of time and change. The film explores themes of identity, belonging, and the bittersweet nature of returning to places that shaped us but no longer define us.

Through quietly observed moments and the island's natural beauty, director Itsumichi Isomura crafts an intimate portrait of a woman caught between two worlds – the simplicity of her island origins and the complexity of her urban future.
