JUSTINE AND JULIETTE is a modern re-telling of the classic sex tale from the Marquis de Sade. Beautiful actresses Maria Forsa and Anne Bie Warburg play two sisters caught in a web of sensual pleasures.

Swedish cinematographer Mac Ahlberg (credited here as Bert Torn) directed this classic erotic film from the 1970’s known not only for its beautifully photographed scenes, but also as an early film featuring US star, Harry Reems.

In this loose-very loose, as a matter of fact-re-telling of the The Marquis de Sade's two seminal erotic-torture novels, Justine & Juliette provides the viewer with yet another smorgasbord of Swedish-styled exploitation, otherwise known as the 'Sensationsfilm' of the day.

The film was helmed once again by exploitation stalwart Mac Ahlberg, who began his career directing such Swedish sex comedies in the seventies before graduating to full-fledged Hollywood cinematographer on such films as The Late Shift, Good Burger and Beverly Hills Cop III.

Make no mistake, however, Justine & Juliette is worlds apart from this sort of fare-well, maybe not Good Burger-falling more in line with Ahlberg's cult work on Re-animator than his stint on The Wonder Years. The film stars Swedish exploitation starlet Marie Forsa at her adorable best, portraying the virginal and pure Justine Karlsson. Forsa's character is on the road with her older, more experienced sister Juliette when they 'encounter'-cue the film's first sex scene-a driver who also just happens to be involved with escorts and prostitution.

It isn't long before Juliette is headlong into the sex-for-money-game, leaving Justine to fend for herself, unwilling to indulge in loveless pleasure or sexual dalliances with strangers. This plot line is basically an excuse to showcase as many sex scenes possible, of the soft and hard core varities, although it must be said that most of the X-rated work is performed by nameless extras rather than Forsa or her co-star Anne Bie Warburg.

The only other amusing side-plot involves 70s porn legend Harry Reems-hilariously dubbed here in Swedish-as a millionaire determined to go out drinkin' and screwin', the victim of an orgasm-induced heart attack. Of course, flesh-revealing hijinks ensure throughout Justine & Juliette, with Forsa in particularly fine form as the 'good' sister, thrown into a depraved world of sin.

While not the best example of Ahlberg's work as Swedish sleaze-meister, Justine & Juliette is a fun romp with more than a few laughs to be had, aided overall by the director's ever-keen eye for shot and setup. Worth a look, for sure.
