"Midori - The Camellia Girl" is an adaptation of "Shojo Tsubaki", a masterpiece manga comic written by a popular cult cartoonist, Suehiro Maruo. His retrospective world that is depicted in erotic, grotesque and sometimes bizarre manner has captured enthusiastic fans around the world. Film director and clothes designer, TORICO fused the modern and fashionable world with the underground world in "Shojo Tsubaki" to create Maruo's unique, kitsch world.
Directed by filmmaker and fashion designer TORICO (Ikeru Shinibana), Shojo Tsubaki is based on Maruo Suehiro's notorious ero guro manga known in English as Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show, which also inspired Harada Hiroshi's 1992 animated adaptation Midori. Drawing from a tale of street theater origins, Shojo Tsubaki reinterprets the story of a poor teenage orphan girl who gets sold into a freak show circus and sexually abused by other members of the troupe. LARME and Gothic＆Lolita Bible model Nakamura Risa, the daughter of actors Nakamura Masatoshi and Igarashi Junko, makes her film debut as the heroine Midori. Kazama Shunsuke (Cats Don't Come When You Call) co-stars as a mysterious magician with dangerous powers whom Midori is both drawn to and afraid of. True to the source material's erotic grotesque content and TORICO's aesthetic style, Shojo Tsubaki is a candy-colored showcase of gruesomely whimsical visuals and stunning art direction and costume design.
