Every family has one: the sibling who is always just a little bit behind the curve when it comes to getting his life together. For sisters Liz (Emily Mortimer), Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), that person is their perennially upbeat brother Ned (Paul Rudd), an erstwhile organic farmer whose willingness to rely on the honesty of mankind is a less-than-optimum strategy for a tidy, trouble-free existence. Ned may be utterly lacking in common sense, but he is their brother and so, after his girlfriend dumps him and boots him off the farm, his sisters once again come to his rescue. As Liz, Miranda and Natalie each take a turn at housing Ned, their brother's unfailing commitment to honesty creates more than a few messes in their comfortable routines. But as each of their lives begins to unravel, Ned's family comes to realize that maybe, in believing and trusting the people around him; Ned isn't such an idiot after all.

OUR IDIOT BROTHER is the affectionate way in which three women regard their idealistic, naïve brother Ned, played by PAUL RUDD in a variety of outfits that must have had the clothing designer screaming with laughter. He's a hippy organic farmer who at a local market is very very stupidly cajoled by a uniformed policeman into selling him dope. After his gaol stint his organic farming girlfriend has teamed up with someone else and refuses to give up his dog Willie Nelson.
Who do you turn to? Why your three sisters of course. First stop is with Liz, EMILY MORTIMER, who is married to a documentary filmmaker, STEVE COOGAN.
Miranda, ELIZABETH BANKS, is riding roughshod over integrity with a celebrity article she's writing. And the third sister Natalie, ZOOEY DESCHANEL, is finding fidelity to partner Rashida Jones a bit problematic. There is something about Paul Rudd's screen presence that I find irresistible and his shambolic persona in this film is ultimately very loveable, even though his compulsive and disingenuous truth-telling causes havoc.
The film was directed by Jesse Peretz from a screenplay by his sister Evgenia Peretz and her partner David Schisgall and he's had a fine cast of women to work with alongside Rudd. Teetering between dumb comedy and indie melodrama I found OUR IDIOT BROTHER charming and at times very funny.
What a wonderful movie. Paul Rudd is terrific. He is truly the star. His performance is outstanding. The idiot is not Paul's character, Ned. He is a good-natured person who is willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Rather, the idiots are his three pretentious sisters who treat Ned like a child, misinterpreting his honesty for immaturity. Ned maintains his integrity which is in sharp contrast to the phoniness that he encounters in others. Misunderstandings occur as Ned forces his sisters to confront their own lies. Ned is perceived as the family problem when in fact he is the solution, except no one knows it, at first. Several scenes are amusing as Ned's good nature and candid outlook produces some awkward situations. This movie succeeds because it tells a story, does so with humor, and keeps the audience engaged.IMDB Reviewer
