The Ward (2010)

Welcome to North Bend Psychiatric Hospital, an isolation ward for disturbed women that holds a terrifying secret…. Kristen, a beautiful but volatile young woman finds herself bruised, cut, drugged and held against her will at the sinister asylum. Trying to gain control of her memory and figure out how she got there, Kristen discovers that a savage ghostly figure roams the halls at night. One by one, the other patients begin to disappear. To survive, Kristen must discover the horrifying truth of the ward.

After a string of dashing hopes (his final decent movie being the gleefully-schlocky Sam Neill starrer In The Mouth of Rage), horror brilliance John Carpenter went back to the drawing board. Or kind of, to TV, to Mick Garris’ Masters of Horror series, where he examined he can stock still fright the Irish bull out of us with his best work in ten yrs, in particular the superb Cigarette Burns episode. So it’s simply correct that he should return to the silver screen where he created his name with low budget, nerve wracking thrillers and trail-blazing repulsion.

The Hospital ward does experience a bit like an episode of Masters of Horror, but that’s no literary criticism, with Carpenter employing his diminutive budget with a little casting (Amber Heard is first class as the bold but confused Kristen) and an insulated location which is as much a character as the workers themselves. The hospital ward where the photographic film is set is a looming, breathing entity, all dark, dark corridors at night and cold, off-kilter spareness during the day. The signified of apprehension is loomin.
