One can say that operations research consists of t he application of sci ent i fi c methods to the complex problems encount ered in the management of large systems. These systems arise, for example, in indust ry , administration and defense. The goal i s t o aid management in the determi nation of policy vi a the use of t ractable models. A model can be defined as a schem at i c description of t he syst em under consideration (which may be a company, a market, a bat t le, or a t ransportati on network, for example) . To be useful , t he m odel must include a representation of the interaction bet ween the syst em elements. An example could be t he m odel of perfect gases. Perfect gases do not exi st , but the concept helps US t o understand the behavior of real gases . Si mi larly, the atomic model helps us to understand t he structure of material. One of t he non-tri vi al problems of opera tions research i s the choice of an appropri at e model . For example, sub-at omic particles help in t he underst anding of superconduct i vi t y, but they could result in an unnecessarily complex model for t he behavior of gases if we were in terested only in the relationship between volume, t emperature and pressure.

In 1924 the firm of Julius Springer published the first volume of Methods of Mathematical Physics by Richard Courant and David Hilbert. In the preface, Courant says this: Since the seventeenth century, physical intuition has served as a vital source for mathematical problems and methods. Recent trends and fashions have, however, weakened the connection between mathematics and physics; mathematicians, turning away from the roots of mathematics in intuition, have concentrated on refinement and emphasized the postulational side of mathematics, and at times have overlooked the unity of their science with physics and other fields.

Mathematical Programming and Control Theory by B. D. Craven
    English | PDF | 1978 | 173 Pages | ISBN : 0412155001 | 32.9 MB

In a mathematical programming problem, an optimum (maxi mum or minimum) of a function is sought, subject to con straints on the values of the variables. In the quarter century since G. B. Dantzig introduced the simplex method for linear programming, many real-world problems have been modelled in mathematical programming terms. Such problems often arise in economic planning - such as scheduling industrial production or transportation - but various other problems, such as the optimal control of an interplanetary rocket, are of similar kind. Often the problems involve nonlinear func tions, and so need methods more general than linear pro gramming. This book presents a unified theory of nonlinear mathe matical programming. The same methods and concepts apply equally to 'nonlinear programming' problems with a finite number of variables, and to 'optimal control' problems with e. g. a continuous curve (i. e. infinitely many variables).

The main characteristics of the real-world decision-making problems facing humans today are multidimensional and have multiple objectives including eco nomic, environmental, social, and technical ones. Hence, it seems natural that the consideration of many objectives in the actual decision-making process re quires multiobjective approaches rather than single-objective. One ofthe major systems-analytic multiobjective approaches to decision-making under constraints is multiobjective optimization as a generalization of traditional single-objective optimization. Although multiobjective optimization problems differ from single objective optimization problems only in the plurality of objective functions, it is significant to realize that multiple objectives are often noncom mensurable and conflict with each other in multiobjective optimization problems.

The main theorem of Linear Programming Duality, relating a "pri mal" Linear Programming problem to its "dual" and vice versa, can be seen as a statement about sign patterns of vectors in complemen tary subspaces of Rn. This observation, first made by R.T. Rockafellar in the late six ties, led to the introduction of certain systems of sign vectors, called "oriented matroids". Indeed, when oriented matroids came into being in the early seventies, one of the main issues was to study the fun damental principles underlying Linear Progra.mrning Duality in this abstract setting.

    A. Planning Company Operations: The General Problem At more or less regular intervals, the management of an industrial enter prise is confronted with the problem of planning operations for a coming period. Within this category of management problems falls not only the overall planning of the company's aggregate production but problems of a more limited nature such as, for example, figuring the least-cost combina tion of raw materials for given output or the optimal transportation schedule. Any such problem of production planning is most rationally solved in two stages: (i) The first stage is to determine the feasible alternatives. For example, what alternative production schedules are at all compatible with the given capacity limitations? What combinations of raw materials satisfy the given quality specifications for the products? etc.

Linear programming is a relatively modern branch of Mathe matics, which is a result of the more scientific approach to management and planning of the post-war era. The purpose of this book is to present a mathematical theory of the subject, whilst emphasising the applications and the techniques of solution. An introduction to the theory of games is given in chapter five and the relationship between matrix games and linear programmes is established. The book assumes that the reader is familiar with matrix algebra and the background knowledge required is covered in the book, Linear Equations by P.M. Cohn, of this series. In fact the notation used in this text conforms with that intro duced by Cohn. The book is based on a course of about 18 lectures given to Mathematics and Physics undergraduates. Several examples are worked out in the text and each chapter is followed by a set of examples. I am grateful to my husband for many valuable suggestions and advice, and also to Professor W. Ledermann, for encourag ing me to write this book.

Today many economists, engineers and mathematicians are familiar with linear programming and are able to apply it. This is owing to the following facts: during the last 25 years efficient methods have been developed; at the same time sufficient computer capacity became available; finally, in many different fields, linear programs have turned out to be appropriate models for solving practical problems. However, to apply the theory and the methods of linear programming, it is required that the data determining a linear program be fixed known numbers.

In Linear Programming: A Modern Integrated Analysis, both boundary (simplex) and interior point methods are derived from the complementary slackness theorem and, unlike most books, the duality theorem is derived from Farkas's Lemma, which is proved as a convex separation theorem. The tedium of the simplex method is thus avoided.
