    Du milieu du XIXe siècle à la fin des années 1980, la sidérurgie franco-allemande a régné sur l’Europe, et ses immenses complexes ont symbolisé la puissance de l’ère industrielle. Ce documentaire raconte son histoire par la voix de ceux qui en ont été les acteurs : salariés d’une part (manœuvres, ouvriers spécialisés, techniciens, ingénieurs), patrons de l’autre, dans les quatre grandes entreprises familiales de la Ruhr (Krupp, Thyssen), du Creusot (Schneider) et de la Lorraine (de Wendel). Ses images souvent spectaculaires (archives et tournages contemporains, notamment en Inde, devenue désormais l’un des leaders mondiaux de l’acier) montrent comment le fer et le feu ont créé une culture à part entière. Mais elles racontent aussi, des premiers « maîtres de forge » aux licenciements massifs qui accompagnent le déclin de la sidérurgie européenne, combien les profits et les risques y furent inégalement partagés.

    Dès son plus jeune âge, Raspoutine fait preuve de dons de guérisseur surprenants. En 1906, il est appelé à la cour de Russie, où il parvient à soulager l'hémophilie dont souffre le fils unique du tsar. Dès lors, Raspoutine occupe une place grandissante auprès du couple impérial, qu'il conseille sur des sujets politiques cruciaux. Son influence est telle qu'il va jusqu'à écarter du pouvoir ses adversaires politiques. L'aristocratie décide alors d'éliminer ce personnage charismatique. Le 16 décembre 1916, Raspoutine périt sous les balles de cinq conjurés, dont le prince Félix Youssoupov, un membre éminent de la famille impériale. Franck Ferrand revient sur les nombreux mystères qui entourent cette affaire.
