En ce milieu du XIXe siècle, Alexina a vingt-et-un ans. Après une enfance passée dans les couvents et les pensionnats religieux, elle a fait l'Ecole Normale et elle arrive, pour son premier poste, chez Madame Avril dont la fille aînée, mariage oblige, ne peut plus s'occuper de la classe des "grandes". Ici, au coeur des Charentes, si l'institution est laïque et familiale, la religion reste forte et la morale sévère. Telle est aussi Alexina qui n'arbore aucune de ces "grâces apprêtées" qui font les jeunes filles "frivoles". Sara, la cadette de Madame Avril qui instruit les "petites", est au contraire fort jolie et libre de manières. Et, dans la chambre coupée d'un rideau qu'elle partage avec Alexina, sa sensualité éclate, mettant bientôt mal à l'aise la nouvelle institutrice. Non sans avoir résisté, celle-ci cède un soir à ses sens tumultueux. Celui-ci, plutôt, car Sara lui apprend l'erreur : Alexina est un homme que des années de préjugés engoncés ont dissimulé aux autres et à lui-même……
