"Across the country, every Friday and Saturday night, they gather in the temples to perform ceremonial dances to a rhythm that seems to reach back in time. It's called the beat." A quickie documentary, originally paired on a drive-in double bill with "Mondo Mod," claims to provide the lowdown on crazy teenage goings-on around the globe. We are shown glimpses of the Los Angeles Sunset Strip teen riots, The Paris student revolt, and the English mods and rockers running wild in Brighton. Things soon wind down to such critical issues of the day as go-go dancing, striped hip huggers, bikers, and surfing, all of which are seen to have worldwide popularity.

The youngster Ta returns to his hometown, and his aunt Pan and her husband Aod bring him home to meet his grandfather and his great-grandmother. Ta misses his mother Daun, who was poisoned by his father Prawase, and sooner he learns that his family will use black magic to bring her back. The warlock Dis needs the devil of three eyes to control the demons that are eating him due to the excessive use of black magic. He is hired by Ta's grandfather to bring Daun back from the afterlife.

Echoes of Silence - by Peter Emmanuel Goldman (1967)

"Echoes of Silence" is hardly a movie at all, in the way we ordinarily use the word, and yet it is a sincere and rather effective film. Its flaws are honest ones, made for the right reasons, and there is not a false moment in it.
Like much of the other work coming out of Jonas Mekas' Filmmaker's Cooperative, it has a structure but no plot, and this is particularly infuriating to a generation raised on mass-produced potboilers. The evening I saw it, several couples walked out. Serves them right for believing those ads about "life and love in our mod world."
