On the run from a group of gangsters, including her powerful father, Grace comes to the small mining town of Dogville in Colorado. Town philosopher Tom Edison gives her shelter and proposes a bargain: she will lend a hand to the townspeople in exchange for a safe place to hide. After a fortnight, the people will vote whether she can stay or must leave. Grace agrees to the terms and then becomes acquainted with the locals. Before long her standing in the town spirals downward as the search for her intensifies.
