This fine release features Nina Simone's New York, 1957 trio session for Bethlehem with Jimmy Bond on bass, Albert 'Tootie' Heath on drums and Simone accompanying herself on piano. Of the 82 studio sessions and live performances that make up Simone's discography, this date marks her very first recording. To say that her studio debut was a success would be a terrible understatement. At 25-years old, Simone's performance boasted all the passion and ebullience of youth, and all the skill and grace of a seasoned veteran. There are many who consider this session Simone's finest recording. Includes the bonus track 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' (Special Extended Version)………

This 20-track EMI set is a valuable examination of the LP brilliance of Nat King Cole, rarely reissued in full on CD but deserving a recommendation superseded only by Frank Sinatra's work of the same period. The disc grabs 20 tracks from '50s classics like Nat Sings for Two in Love (his first LP, recorded with Nelson Riddle), The Nat King Cole Story (a set of re-recordings, with Ralph Carmichael), Just One of Those Things (with Billy May), and Love Is the Thing (with Gordon Jenkins……

This is one of the several collaborations between Laurindo Almeida, Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton and Bud Shank - better known as the L.A.4 - and it stands as one of the most sincere, elegant performances of jazz arrangements and crossover pieces I have ever heard. The egos are gone, replaced with passionate, intense, but never overstated performances.
In Almeida's arrangement of Faure's "Pavane, op. 50," Bud Shank's sensitivity for the classical flute blends sweetly with Almeida's true understanding of the original, then transformed into an enlightening jazz arrangement. Ray Brown's bass playing is classic and Jeff Hamilton's performance is solid. Hearing this album, in contrast to much of the jazz & pizazz marketed today, transmits a "they don't make 'em like they used to" sense which is welcomed by the nostalgic listener.

This album contains 12 songs, that seem to be recorded during a 1985 USA concert. The sound quality is somewhat poor unfortunately, but for the real Nina fan that will be no problem, I think !!

This is really a compilation for first time Nina Simone listeners, and, an absolute must have for those who are already devoted to her. Superb live recordings such as 'My Baby Just Cares for Me', 'I Loves You Porgy.' Actually, the majority of them appear to be live takes, or at least sound that way. 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' is glorious, 'See-Line Woman', unforgettable. Mississippi Goddamn, a live concert version, shows her passion and strength. 'Work Song' is another track that will stay in your head long after you've stopped listening. There's just too many things that are so good about this compilation. Hearing is believing! What a truly great musician she was!

Nina Simone, the great singer, pianist, composer, arranger, songwriter, feminist, activist, mother and woman. Nina was born in North Carolina, USA, February 21, 1933. Although Nina was called the "High Priestess of Soul" by her fans and was regarded by them as an almost religious figure, she was often misunderstood as well. The High Priestess would walk different paths to find the adequate songs to spread her message. A protest singer; a jazz singer; a pianist; an arranger and a composer, Nina Simone is a great artist who defies easy classification. She is all of these: a jazz-rock-pop-folk-black musician. In fact, we can find her biography in jazz, rock, pop, black and soul literature. Her style and her hits provided many singers and groups with material for hits of their own. Nina Simone passed away on April 21, 2003 in Carry-le-Rouet, France. She was Aged 70. She is survived by her daughter and will be forever missed - yet forever treasured.

No relation to the other Bill Evans, this saxophonist has an adventurous spirit and strong improvising skills despite his utilization of a rapper on some records. Evans started on piano before switching to tenor. He moved to New York in 1978 and was with Miles Davis during most of 1981-1984. He also played with John McLaughlin's short-lived, re-formed Mahavishnu Orchestra in the mid-'80s, was with Elements from 1982 on, and has recorded as a leader for Lipstick, including with his 1990s group Petite Blonde. Subsequent solo dates include 1995's Escape, 1997's Starfish & the Moon, and 1999's Touch.
