Although Joe Negri is widely known nationally for his role as "Handyman Negri" from the PBS program, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, a smaller subset of truly fortunate fans have had the opportunity to appreciate his "chops" as a first rate jazz guitarist. This collection is comprised of a number of jazz standards, extremely well recorded at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. The band is made up of most of the finest jazz musicians in the Pittsburgh area and fulfill their support role superbly. If you are already familiar with Joe's work, you will enjoy this album as a continuation of his marvelous career. If you have not had the good fortune to hear Mr. Negri before now, you have a real treat awaiting you. Highly Recommended. – Blue Lou

This album was written by Composer Joshua Cusack in late 2018 to celebrate his graduation from his undergraduate degree at the Western Australian Academy of Performing arts. The concept of the album was to write a modern jazz album for large ensemble heavily featuring free improvisation as well as electronics.
"The outcome was dark brooding and like no large ensemble jazz I have heard before." - Joshua Cusack, Composer arranger.
"His willingness to take risks, go for ideas, and break the rules which makes this project an ambitious and exciting first recording for someone who will no doubt go on to producing interesting and creative music in the future. Congratulations Josh and welcome to the large ensemble club, we've been expecting you." - Mace Francis

This CD reissue by Columbia in their Legacy series is a bit of a hodgepodge, covering a 2 1/2 year period in the bandleading career of xylophonist Red Norvo. Unfortunately the music is not programmed in chronological order but since most of these largely enjoyable 18 titles (including two never previously released) have rarely been reissued, this sampler will have to do until a more "complete" session comes along. Norvo's band during this period not only featured the occasional vocals of his wife, Mildred Bailey, but fine solo work from the tenor of Herbie Haymer, clarinetist Hank D'Amico and trumpeter Stew Pletcher in addition to the leader. The biggest key in Norvo's orchestra achieving a sound of its own, however, were the distinctive and inventive arrangements of Eddie Sauter. This CD contains great music that deserves to be reissued more coherently.

Paquito D'Rivera's second recording as leader of the United Nation Orchestra features a live concert from 1997. By then the ensemble (which was Dizzy Gillespie's last big band) did not display that distinctive a personality and was clearly missing the late trumpeter. However, it still had plenty to offer including such players as trombonists Conrad Herwig and William Cepeda, guitarist Fareed Haque, trumpeter Diego Urcola, and, of course, its leader. Most of the material on the CD is from bandmembers but the three most memorable selections originated elsewhere: Emiliano Salvador's "Puerto Padre," Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," and Ernesto Lecuona's "Andalucia Medley," which is taken as a clarinet-bass duet.

German saxophonist and bandleader Max Greger is a popular and well-known musician in Europe with myriad credits to his name, including film and television work. A gift of an accordion as a child first spurred his musical inclinations, and Greger ultimately studied clarinet and saxophone at the Munich Conservatory during the late '30s. Briefly serving in the military toward the end of World War II, Greger began performing with various jazz groups…

Joe Sample is the golden boy of American fusion-jazz, but his recent project Children of the Sun is not as sunny as the title might imply. Stimulated by a visit to the Caribbean island of St. Croix, he started to look particularly into the subject of slavery – a part of his own family history. Sample has been planning this project since 1995, and will bring his composition to the Berlin audience with the NDR Bigband (the Hamburg Radio Big Band), arranged by Jorg Achim Keller.

One month after leaving the band in 2013, Gilkes was invited back to preside over a farewell performance at the WDR Funkhaus Studio 4, the result of which is this sharp and stylish recording, named after the city in which Gilkes embraced new friends while broadening his musical horizons.

The five-disc, 2009 Duke Ellington collection Original Album Series brings together a handful of the legendary bandleader's 1960s albums. Included here are Will Big Bands Ever Come Back?, Jazz Violin Sessions, Mary Poppins, Ellington '65, and Ellington '66. Although these albums found Ellington attempting to compete in the post-swing rock & roll era with a more commercial sound, they are still great jazz albums that should appeal to most Ellington fanatics.

Alan Hartwell has been producing recording sessions with some of the worlds' finest Jazz Musicians since 1958. His career in the music business, which has now spanned four decades, began when he put together a recording band, tapping the best talent from what was previously the Arthur Godfrey Ochestra on CBS Television, to produce a session featuring drummer Cozy Cole from New Yorks' famous Metroploe Cafe, which became a worldwide #1 hit on the Pop Music Charts. Alan had pared down the larger orchestra to a recording ensemble of twelve, which consisted of Dick Hyman (Organ and Arrangements),Bert Farber (Piano), Al Caiola (Guitar), Wendall Marshall ((Bass), Peanuts Hucko (Clarinet), Pepper Adams and Barney Bigard (Saxaphones), Bernie Pevin and Joe Wilder (Trumpets), Urbie Green and Frank Rehak (Trombones), and of course featuring COZY COLE on Drums.
