    English | PDF | 1990 | 298 Pages | ISBN : 3034857004 | 21.8 MB

Numerical simulation and modelling of electric circuits and semiconductor devices are of primal interest in today's high technology industries. At the Oberwolfach Conference more than forty scientists from around the world, in cluding applied mathematicians and electrical engineers from industry and universities, presented new results in this area of growing importance. The contributions to this conference are presented in these proceedings. They include contributions on special topics of current interest in circuit and device simulation, as well as contributions that present an overview of the field. In the semiconductor area special lectures were given on mixed finite element methods and iterative procedures for the solution of large linear systems. For three dimensional models new discretization procedures including software packages were presented. Con nections between semiconductor equations and the Boltzmann equation were shown as well as relations to the quantum transport equation. Other issues discussed in this area include the design of simulation programs for semiconductors, vectorcomputers, and interface problems in several dimensions.

Agriculture as a Metaphor for Creativity in All Human Endeavors by Robert S. Anderssen, Philip Broadbridge, Yasuhide Fukumoto, Kenji Kajiwara, Matthew Simpson, Ian Turner
    English | PDF (True) | 2018 | 177 Pages | ISBN : 9811078106 | 7.4 MB

This book is a collection of papers presented at the 'Forum "Math-for-Industry" 2016 ' (FMfl2016), held at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, on November 21–23, 2016. The theme for this unique and important event was “Agriculture as a Metaphor for Creativity in All Human Endeavors”, and it brought together leading international mathematicians and active researchers from universities and industry to discuss current challenging topics and to promote interactive collaborations between mathematics and industry.

The success of agricultural practice relies fundamentally on its interconnections with and dependence on biology and the environment. Both play essential roles, including the biological adaption to cope with environmental challenges of biotic and abiotic stress and global warming. The book highlights the development of mathematics within this framework that successful agricultural practice depends upon and exploits.

The aim of this book is to assist the reader to build up the necessary range of skills needed to be able to solve problems by mathematical modelling. After an introduction to the general principles and advantages of mathematical modelling, chapters 1 to 4 concentrate on the development of basic modelling skills. Each of chapters 5 to 11 isolates a particular modelling concept and provides exercises aimed at developing skills in the use of that concept. The later chapters may be conveniently read in any order as they are self contained. In keeping with the Work Out approach, each chapter contains a large number of examples and exercises, taken from a variety of subject areas and covering a broad range of difficulty. Answers are provided wherever appropriate.

Mathematical Modelling of Physical Systems by Michel Cessenat
    English | PDF(True) | 2018 | 517 Pages | ISBN : 3319947575 | 5.4 MB

Comprehensive and thorough, this monograph emphasizes the main role differential geometry and convex analysis play in the understanding of physical, chemical, and mechanical notions. Central focus is placed on specifying the agreement between the functional framework and its physical necessity and on making clear the intrinsic character of physical elements, independent from specific charts or frames. The book is divided into four sections, covering thermostructure, classical mechanics, fluid mechanics modelling, and behavior laws. An extensive appendix provides notations and definitions as well as brief explanation of integral manifolds, symplectic structure, and contact structure. Plenty of examples are provided throughout the book, and reviews of basic principles in differential geometry and convex analysis are presented as needed. This book is a useful resource for graduate students and researchers in the field.

Artificial organs may be considered as small-scale process plants, in which heat, mass and momentum transfer operations and, possibly, chemical transformations are carried out. This book proposes a novel analysis of artificial organs based on the typical bottom-up approach used in process engineering. Starting from a description of the fundamental physico-chemical phenomena involved in the process, the whole system is rebuilt as an interconnected ensemble of elemental unit operations.

This book deals with the prediction of possible future scenarios concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the well-known SIR model by Kermack and McKendrick a compartment model is established. This model comprises its own assumptions, transition rates and transmission dynamics, as well as a corresponding system of ordinary differential equations. Making use of numerical methods and a nonstandard-finite-difference scheme, two submodels are implemented in Matlab in order to make parameter estimations and compare different scenarios with each other.
