Welcome back, Casey Dienel. After an eight-year hiatus during which the singer-songwriter—who has also recorded as White Hinterland—actually thought of themselves as having quit music, they've returned with the message that it's OK to veer from the expected road. "I quit the idea of me and quit the ideal of me, too … Riding it out day by day, year by year/ I'm making it up as I go/ It's not going to be L.A. or New York/ I'll give you a call when I finally land it," Dienel sings—before casually announcing, "fuck a five-year plan"—on the excellent, optimistic "People Can Change." Sung in a tumbling rush that never sounds hurried, and blessed with a bracing blast of trumpet and trombone over cosmopolitan piano, it sparks the thought: Why isn't jazzy Americana more of a thing? Seemingly fueled by a rebellious streak that's more about doing their own thing than pushing back against anyone else's expectations, Dienel genre hops with abandon on the appropriately named My Heart Is an Outlaw.
