Sue Halloran, Jeanne O'Connor and Holli Ross were all working as professional solo singers in New York when they were brought together to perform at a nostalgia-oriented concert. Since then the group has created a repertoire that ranges from authentic re-creations of Boswell Sisters songs from the 1930s, to adventurous original jazz arrangements. The Pearls' charming show can move from Andrews Sisters to Sinatra, Basie, Carole King, Brazilian, and bebop. For "It Don't Mean A Thing" they are compile an album of jazz favorites.

At the time of his very first recordings in 1941, Muddy Waters was not yet called Muddy Waters, and he played acoustic guitar. It wasn't his guitar since he didn't own one, but one that was lent to him by Alan Lomax, the man who discovered him deep in Mississippi when he was a farmer and an amateur musician.

Surely Renée Fleming's soprano must be one of the most beautiful voices before the public today. Though renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Strauss, and Verdi, as well as for her commitment to contemporary music, she says that the bel canto repertoire has always been central to her career. On this recording, which features scenes and arias from operas by Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini, she proves that she has achieved total, effortless technical mastery of the uniquely difficult vocal writing characteristic of the style. Every note is perfectly placed. Her runs, including scales over a huge range in both directions, are as clear and evenly paced as a chain of exquisite pearls. Her leaps always land in the center of the pitch. Her intonation is flawless.

"… the SACDs definitely offer a clearer view into the music. You also get a better sense of the group harmonies, with a clearer sense of the other three members of the group’s vocal contributions … To my ears, this is the best these albums have ever sounded, so if you are an early Frampton fan, these will really make you smile. Marilyn Scott takes her love for jazz to new heights on Every Time We Say Goodbye, with a seasoned East Coast quintet led by acclaimed pianist Cyrus Chestnut. The 10-song repertoire is comprised of smoky, wee-hours standards such as the Cole Porter-penned title track, a Rio-kissed samba take on Irving Berlin's "I Got Lost in His Arms", and a blues walk through "Detour Ahead". The arrangements offer fresh nuances to familiar favorites as do Marilyn's artful and articulate vocal interpretations.

The legendary live performance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on December 18 & 19, 1980, 18 years after Kondrashin premiered "Babi Yar", and about 3 months before he suddenly died. It is a transcendental masterpiece that is unparalleled yet. The lyrics of Yevtuschenko at the time of the premiere were forced to use a revised version when recording to Melodia later, so the performance with the original lyrics used here is even more valuable. Kondrashin's strong assertion and a kind of unique tension have been consistently maintained from the beginning, which begins with a heavy weight, and it is an amazing performance that grabs the listener's heart. This release features the new mastering from the original analog master.

Following his acclaimed recording of solo sonatas by contemporaries of Beethoven, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet releases the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos as pianist and director with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Directing the Swedish Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard, Jean-Efflam writes: "For the pianist there is also the delight of appearing face to face with the entire orchestra, in direct visual communication, the musicians perhaps more likely to take personal initiatives, thus multiplying the pleasure of a genuine participation, dialogue, and musical exchange". The cadenzas used in this recording are all Beethoven’s, from the set that he wrote out in 1809, and so are contemporaneous with the Fifth Concerto. The recording includes the Quintet for Piano and Winds, Op. 16.

Apparently Couperin's music is extraordinarily difficult to perform; artists heard here are recognized as masters of the repertory. Mieneke van der Velden plays a 1617 viola da gamba as well as another instrument from 1768; Glen Wilson plays a contemporary harpsichord copied after a French instrument dating to the mid-18th century. They produce a rich sound which doubtless will appeal strongly to those interested in this repertory. On this recording they are larger than life, placed primarily in front of the listener but with much reflected sound as well.

Don't be put off by the precious title; this is a delightful collection of 17th-century English music built around the delicate viola da gamba skills of the Dutch virtuoso Mieneke van der Velden. Mostly oozing a delicious melancholy, but occasionally boasting a spring in its step, here is the best of such composers as John Dowland, Matthew Locke and William Corkine, with songs from Tobias Hume and Nicholas Lanier. Exquisitely played, with as much devotion to detail as technical mastery, here is period music to beguile many a modern moodswing.

This is sublime: quite simply the finest registration of 17th century English song on the market. It’s one of those perfectly designed programmes, which have all the built-in variety you need for over an hour’s uninterrupted listening pleasure. There is plenty here for the casual listener and connoisseur alike and, despite the title, the introspective mood is upliftingly beautiful throughout. The scholarly preparation which makes this possible, and the clear sense that these interpretations have been honed, through regular performance, are what we’ve come to expect from the brilliantly successful partnership of Dutch soprano and the lutenist… An outstanding achievement on every front.

During this 150th anniversary year of Jean Sibelius, his music is being performed and discussed more widely than ever. As might be expected, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, noted for its numerous and often revelatory Sibelius recordings, is planning its own homage: all seven symphonies will be performed at the 2015 edition of the orchestra's annual Sibelius Festival. With principal conductor Okko Kamu the Lahti SO has also prepared a special birthday present for their great compatriot. Recorded between 2012 and 2014 this new anniversary cycle is released as a boxed set of three SACDs with a surround sound option, and is accompanied by an ample booklet with informative notes by Andrew Barnett, author of a Sibelius biography. Needless to say, Kamu has conducted these works numerous times since then, in Finland and abroad, but has never before put his name to a complete cycle on disc.
