Almost unknown today, the South German Bohrer family produced a number of outstanding musicians, including the brothers Antoine, a violinist, and Max, a cellist. The two composed several works together, including the imposing "Grande symphonie militaire", which is boldly virtuosic and peppered with memorable themes. Antoine Bohrer's Violin Concerto in E minor contains elements familiar from Paganini; Max's Cello Concerto emphatically demonstrates how quickly the cello had developed as a solo instrument in the early 19th century. The violinist Friedemann Eichhorn, the cellist Alexander Hülshoff and the Jena Philharmonic under Nicolás Pasquet present the composing brothers in three world premiere recordings.
