The melodies, rhythms, and colours of speech surround us with music all the time. Dialects are particular shades of spoken music, regionally distinct speech patterns that are deeply woven into community identity. As native Newfoundlanders, we hail from the home of some of the richest, most diverse, and most beautiful English dialects in the world. In making this album, we celebrate this heritage, using the stories and dialects of Newfoundland as a foundation for new musical compositions.
After studying our province’s dialect families with the help of linguistics and folklore researchers at Memorial University of Newfoundland, we toured the island, recording interviews with residents across the province. We visited Cape St. Mary’s, Branch, Shearstown, Freshwater (Conception Bay North), King’s Point, Fogo, Tilting, Port au Port East, Cape St. George, and Port aux Basques, speaking with people whose dialects were variously influenced by Irish, British, Scottish, and French heritage.
