Welcome to the new riot. Lambrini Girls—Brighton-based Phoebe Lunny (vocals, guitar) and Lilly Macieira-Boşgelmez (bass) at the core, with a hired-hand drummer as needed—take apart fascist cops, misogynistic assholes, gentrification, celebrity privilege and other classic punk tropes for the modern era. There's absolute fury on their excellently named debut, Who Let The Dogs Out, but plenty of humor too. "Big Dick Energy" makes clear they're not wielding the title as a cutesy compliment. Fueled by off-to-the-races rhythm and fuzzed-out bass, the song finds Lunny savagely ripping apart condescending dudes. "Oh my god, hi, do you remember me?/ You reposted that thing I wrote about women in music/ Thank you so much for doing your bit,'" she mocks, wielding a punch at the end of each verse: "It's not that fucking big." Lunny's fire-and-brimstone voice is an excellent punk yob; her speaking accent does not smooth out or fade away and, live, she sounds just like she does on record. And every song is a throat-shredder. "Harassed in the workplace/ My cold resting bitch face/ When will I learn/ That men just do it better?" she spits over the guitar storm and determined groove of "Company Culture" before reaching an exasperated final straw: "Michael, I don't want to suck you off on my lunch break." Irresistible "Cuntology 101" boasts a cheerleader-style chant—"C-U-N-T!/ I'm going to do what's best for me!/ I'm cunty!"—and a butt-shaking dance-floor rhythm as Lunny reclaims a giddy laundry list of things that are "cunty": setting boundaries, learning to love yourself, getting therapized, learning how to say no. But also "doing a poo at your friend's house" and "I'm going to be a massive whore … I don't care if you slut shame." "Nothing Tastes As Good As It Feels" is a reference to model Kate Moss' self-proclaimed circa-2009 mantra, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"—a line that was quickly embraced by pro-anorexia sites. Lunny snarls it over a cowbell boogie, building to a smash-and-grab ending and the declaration, "Give me full fat, you fucking bastards!" "No Homo" employs classic rock riffs and sugary harmonies. "You're Not From Around Here"—railing against the downfalls of gentrification—is post-punk fury with a menacing guitar line and Macieira-Boşgelmez's grungy bass threatening to blow out speakers. And "Love" wields Damned-style fun-house guitar and a moody, Siouxsie-esque breakdown. Lunny's view, if you're wondering: "True love is nothing more than the wrong hill to die on/ Psychoanalyze my attachment styles and cross every boundary at once."
