Maurice Guillaume was born on February 5, 1899 in Mazy (province of Namur) in a family of carpenter craftsmen who appreciated music1. As a child, he studied piano and harmony at the Conservatory of Namur, before working on the organ with Auguste Verrees, organist of the Saint-Aubain Cathedral of Namur.
Although destined for the profession of architect, he turned his career to music.
He entered the Royal Conservatory of Brussels where he obtained several awards: counterpoint (1922), fugue (1923), organ (1924), diploma of Virtuosity and Government Medal (for the organ, in 1927). He then deepened the composition and orchestration with Joseph Jongen who said of him: "Monsieur Guillaume is a master. He should not be afraid of comparison with the great names of the Belgian organ".
His skills designate him to the highest functions. But, humble and discreet, he remained deeply attached to the Charleroi region all his life, in which he developed most of his activities2.
Holder in 1920 of the organ of the Saint-Sulpice church in Jumet (built in 1841 by Hippolyte Loret), he teaches piano lessons. This is how he met his wife, Marguerite Gonsette (also a harpist).
A few years later, in 1930, during a trip to the island of Ushant, he met the French composer and organist Charles Tournemire. A lively friendship ensued, accompanied by many contacts. The imprint of César Franck's successor will be indelible, both in terms of organ, writing and musical inspiration.
In 1942, Maurice Guillaume took over the organ of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Châtelet (near Charleroi), where a new instrument with 44 stops had just been installed by Maurice Delmotte. For about forty years, it was at this forum that he gave the full measure of his talent.
