This cheap Wong Jing-produced triad flick is a surprisingly watchable guilty pleasure. Nothing new happens here, but that's just fine. Featuring a righteous Jordan Chan and plenty of cheesy CGI blood. 'Nuff said.

Director Ronnie Yu (a brilliant Capra-esque director, also one of the best directors in the world, but largely underrated), who directed this before directing the acclaimed The Bride with White Hair, delivered here a highly enjoyable, moving, highly underrated gem which has been virtually all but forgotten. Yuen Biao is credited as the starring role, despite the film focusing more on Leon Lai. Ng Man-Tat is the kind-hearted owner of an apartment and restaurant in a poor deprived area of Hong Kong. Yuen Biao plays his uncle (also a cook) and Leon Lai a rich kid who runs away and finds the family atmosphere of the neighborhood much more appealing.

In the effort to watch every film made by charismatic actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, this reviewer happened upon a 1995 stinker called School Days. A Taiwan-Hong Kong production, the film stars Kaneshiro as Eagle, a reformed rebel who still scares the bejesus out of all his classmates. His too-cool stoicism comes into play when new kid Jimmy Lin moves into town. He's from a rich family, is mighty cute, and dances real well during recess. Sadly, the evil bullies envy him, which leads to lots of…well, bullying. Thankfully, Eagle has his back, but not because he really gives a crap about the new kid; he just likes to stop people from bullying others. Somehow a friendship is born, and our heroes manage to go bungee-jumping. Meanwhile, the audience falls asleep or gets a high score on "Tetris" for their Game Boy. Yes, this garbage is made-to-order crap for twelve or thirteen year-old girls, but it lacks the depth of an ABC afterschool special, much less an entire feature film. Nothing that occurs in this film is worth your time, unless you simply have to watch every Takeshi Kaneshiro movie ever made. I thought I wanted to. After this movie, I didn't want to anymorefilm, when it's not.

By its very title, "Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger" obviously tries to capitalize on the success of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Apart from some desert scenes, however, it isn't much like its titular inspiration at all. The story is pretty standard for a kung fu movie: while very young, a brother and sister get separated by violent circumstances, and their respective adopted families develop into bitter enemies. Twenty years later, taking after their parents and having become kung fu masters (what else?), they discover the truth, but not before going through a lot of troublesome misunderstandings, blood-soaked soul searching and, naturally, a bunch of wild fight scenes. A handsome hero - another kung fu master, of course - is introduced as a love interest for the sister (Jade Leung).

The first time I saw this movie,i didn't even know that this had something to do with crying freeman! Of course they changed the story quite a bit! But in this case that doesn't matter! The focus of the story here is on the loyalty between the adopted son and the family (father)! It is about betrayal and revenge! Also there is some love! For the most part this is a crime/gangster drama with great action! The action consists of gun play and sword fights. These fights are more then excellent! It is a mystery to me why this movie doesn't get the attention it deserves! It is much better than most HK movies they bring out on DVD's! But that is a general complaint I have! There are a lot of Hong Kong titles out there that would blow your mind, but somehow never got made on DVD. Or at least not made available internationally! Which is strange, because they did import these titles on video! Anyway, this movie is a classic! Simon Yam in a early good role. Brilliant!
