    If you thought only the Chinese and Japanese could make decent swordplay movies, you haven’t spent nearly enough time with South Korean cinema. They’ve cranked out some good ones in the past, though to be fair, South Korean swordplay movies tend to get stuck in their own grand sense of melodrama. This looks like one of those movies, with great action, swordplay, and heavy, heavy doses of the sap that just begs for a tragic ending.     Soon after the liberation of Italy in 1945, Roberto Rossellini broke new cinematic ground on the war-torn streets of Rome by filming his incredible Open City, about the life-affirming struggles of ordinary Roman citizens who defied fascist forces. Forced to use whatever film stock he could salvage and to use amateurs to fill in necessary roles, Open City stands as an historic landmark—an introduction to a new film movement termed Italian neo-realism. Significantly, it also marks the first time Federico Fellini ever worked on a film: He had been approached by a chance meeting with the elder Rossellini. Because of the immediate post-war conditions in ravaged Rome, Rossellini was forced to use whatever resources he could muster to make any film at all, considering he had a total budget of only $20,000. The rough cinéma vérité appearance achieved in Open City, with its natural lighting and uneven film stock, was more due to economic and pragmatic considerations than it was a deliberate attempt to found the new Italian art form of neo-realism.     McMurphy, a man with several assault convictions to his name, finds himself in jail once again. This time, the charge is statutory rape when it turns out that his girlfriend had lied about being eighteen, and was, in fact, fifteen (or, as McMurphy puts it, "fifteen going on thirty-five"). Rather than spend his time in jail, he convinces the guards that he's crazy enough to need psychiatric care and is sent to a hospital. He fits in frighteningly well, and his different point of view actually begins to cause some of the patients to progress. Nurse Ratched becomes his personal cross to bear as his resistance to the hospital routine gets on her nerves.

    This classic story of Mob informers was based on a number of true stories and filmed on location in and around the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey. Mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. The police and the Waterfront Crime Commission know that Friendly is behind a number of murders, but witnesses play deaf and dumb ("D&D"), submitting to their oppressed position rather than risk the danger and shame of informing. Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) is a dockworker whose brother Charley (Rod Steiger) is Friendly‘s lawyer. Some years earlier, Terry had been a promising boxer until Friendly had Charley instruct Terry to deliberately lose a fight that he could have won, so that Friendly could win money betting on the weaker opponent.
