    Dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, l'acier s'impose face au fer et au bronze par ses qualités de résistance. Mais on ne sait pas encore le mouler pour en faire de grosses pièces. Par un travail acharné, le fils de paysan Jacob Mayer parvient à trouver, dans sa fonderie de Bochum, un procédé révolutionnaire qui lui permet bientôt de fabriquer de très grosses cloches en acier. De son côté, à l'âge de 14 ans, Alfred Krupp a hérité de son père une entreprise de sidérurgie criblée de dettes, installée à Essen. En quelques années, il redresse l'usine et fera de cette firme familiale l'une des premières entreprises d'Europe. Mais en 1855, le succès remporté par Jacob Mayer à l'Exposition universelle de Paris lui est insupportable. Celui-ci y expose en effet une cloche d'acier qui attire les curieux. Krupp affirme que le moulage de l'acier est impossible et accuse publiquement Jacob de charlatanerie. Par une action spectaculaire, Jacob arrive à faire la preuve de sa maîtrise du procédé. Ses cloches sont l'attraction de l'Exposition universelle et son invention lui vaut une médaille d'or.
