    Mikio Kobayashi lives quietly with his wife, daughter, and divorced sister in downtown Tokyo, where xenophobic neighbors insist on them participating in community meetings, and the most exciting thing to happen is the disappearance of a pet parrot. But one day Kagawa appears, claiming to be the son of a financier who once helped Kobayashi's company. In return for his family's past help, Kagawa requests to move in, and Kobayashi's quiet lifestyle is quickly forgotten when Kagawa invites his Brazilian (or is she Bosnian?) wife and a myriad of eclectic and foreign visitors to join him in the cramped apartment. The Kobayashis are comically tossed about in confusion as Kagawa and his associates run amuck in their home. Kagawa, with the help of his visitors, manages to reveal old secrets and stir up the monotony of Mikio's former life with affairs, blackmail, and rampant youthful partying.

    Il est bien difficile de raconter et encore plus de résumer un film comme l'Ecume des jours. Trois garçons : Colin, Chick, Nicolas. Trois filles : Chloé, Alise, Isis. Colin et Chloé sont les héros principaux. Chick et Alise viennent ensuite. Nicolas est une sorte de témoin. Isis ne fait que des apparitions sporadiques. A la faveur d'un brouillon de Jean Sol Partre (anagramme de Jean-Paul Sartre), retrouvé par Alise dans une poubelle, nous faisons connaissance avec Alise et Chick. Alise aime Chick et volontiers l'épouserait. Mais Chick éprouve une autre passion : c'est un dévôt de Partre, prêt à engloutir une fortune dans l'achat des reliques de l'idole (une pipe, un short ridicule ou même simplement la trace de son index sur une reliure). Belmont nous invite ensuite à pénétrer dans l'univers de Colin et de Nicolas. Chacun d'eux, à sa manière, a découvert une machine à tuer l'ingratitude du temps. Nicolas s'applique, selon des procédés mécaniques dignes de la science-fiction et en suivant minutieusement les consignes du Gouffé, à préparer des plats théoriquement succulents.
