Dameronia, a group organized by drummer Phily Joe Jones to perform the great bop-era arrangements of Tadd Dameron, came back together four years after Jones's death for a concert in France. Fortunately, it was recorded and released on this Soul Note CD, for since that time, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan and pianist Walter Davis, Jr., have also passed away. In addition to those two masters, the 1989 version of Dameronia included trumpeters Don Sickler (whose transcriptions made this group possible) and Virgil Jones, trombonist Benny Powell, Frank Wess on alto and flute, baritonist Cecil Payne, bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Kenny Washington. The ensembles are very much in Dameron's classic style, but all of the musicians also have plenty of solo space. Tadd Dameron's legacy was very well served by Dameronia, and this set is a fine tribute. ~ AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

The first of five albums headed by trombonist Jimmy Cleveland during 1955-1959 (he has not led any since), this out of print LP (which was reissued by Trip in the 1970s) features Cleveland in medium-size groups with trumpeter Ernie Royal; either Lucky Thompson or Jerome Richardson on tenor; baritonist Cecil Payne; Hank Jones, John Williams, or Wade Legge on piano; Barry Galbraith, Paul Chambers, or Oscar Pettiford on bass; and either Max Roach, Osie Johnson, or Joe Harris on drums. The all-star cast interprets a variety of Quincy Jones arrangements, alternating standards with lesser-known originals, and although many of his sidemen get fine spots, Cleveland generally wins solo honors. ~ AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

Juneteenth is a traditional festival of freedom for African Americans. The name comes from a date, June 19, 1865, the day blacks in Texas learned that slavery was abolished. Inspired by the upcoming 150th anniversary of the festival, American jazz pianist Stanley Cowell first created the suite for piano recorded here, and then went on to create a work on the same theme for orchestra, choir and electronics. Cowell, currently a professor at Rutgers, has worked with many jazz greats including Max Roach, Bobby Hutcherson, Clifford Jordan, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.

During his brief career as a jazz pianist, Gil Coggins made his mark as a sideman on recordings with a number of greats, including Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane. But he left music during the late 1950s to sell real estate and never looked back, until being enticed to record his first CD as a leader for Interplay. These sessions, recorded in 2001 and 2002 (issued by Smalls) may very well represent Coggins' final recordings as a leader, as he died in an auto accident in 2004. With Mike Fitzbenjamin on bass and either Louis Hayes or Jimmy Wormworth on drums, Coggins still has chops in spite of the long layoff from music.

And so, deep in Grumpy Woods, we retreat into the world of prog to reflect on the dystopian nightmare of the world outside. Away from corporations sucking the pennies from our pockets and the politicians who lie to our faces, smirking at our gullibility. The bishops in their finery peering at us from a lofty height, hands held out in judgement “for a small consideration, your sins will be forgiven”. Our worth measured in trinkets, whilst the disaffected, the lonely and the poor appeal for mercy. The acquisition of wealth poisons everything.

Let Tear us Apart was born as a progressive rock studio album of the Italian band Instant Curtain. The obsessive arpeggios weave embroidery and the mellotron stretches its veil while the bass pulsates and dances. A synchronous of drums accompanies Hammond’s scales as the distortions of guitars warm up like a mother’s caress. Trapped imperfect mechanisms screech announcing “beyond music there is destiny, beyond destiny there is music!”. When everything is silent, the aftertaste of a past that returns from a dimensional fracture remains. Timeless times shine by illuminating the way in the treatment of sounds, in the use of electronics and in the freshness of these nine tracks, ready to seduce a large group of rock lovers in all its contemporary shades.

The first problem encountered in defining guitarist Chris Biesterfeldt's work is that of categorization and antecedents because, in this guy, that list appears to run to the hundreds, maybe everyone who's ever picked up the six-string axe. Add to that, then, the factor that it often sounds as though he's playing with three hands…no make that four: two for strumming and picking and two more for fretting, and you'll be prepared for what will greet you on the very first cut.

This edition of Savoy's Giants of Jazz series delves into cuts Kenny Burrell recorded for the Muse label in the late '70s and early '80s. While not as consistent as the Motor City guitarist's classic work in the '50s on Blue Note, this material certainly isn't second tier. All ten tracks, "St. Thomas," "You and the Night and the Music," "All Blues," "Listen to the Dawn," "Flamingo," "In a Mellow Tone," "Groovin' High," "Over the Rainbow," "Tenderly," and "Willow Weep for Me," have been remastered using 24-bit digital transfers from the original acetates and tape masters. Hearing these tracks freshened up is a pleasure and should even satisfy the picky audiophile. The only downside to this disc, and the Savoy Giants of Jazz series, is the lack of personnel and recording dates. Still, the mid-line pricing makes this set recommended. ~ AllMusic Review by Al Campbell
