Sharon Kam loves opera. More, maybe, than one would expect of a world‐class clarinettist. Unless you know that she has been married for many years to an opera conductor and so feels quite at home with music drama. Then you will understand that her new CD album Opera! fulfils a long‐held dream and at the same time adds several interesting pieces to the instrument's relatively limited concert repertoire. In any case, this recording goes far beyond what one normally expects of arrangements.

One of the most glorious launches in history, the title track for the thrice-platinum The Final Countdown is so bombastically brilliant, such glorious garbage, that this nuclear hair assault could only spew from the vacuous '80s. But the full-tilt follow-up "Rock the Night" rules also: "You know it ain't easy/Running out of thrills." "Carrie" comes off a consummate butane ballad. Meanwhile, the rest of the disc packs so much power that Swedish superheroes Europe get away with all the processed pretension. In fact, the lofty ambition of "Danger on the Track," "Ninja," and "Cherokee" (each as tasty as its title) combines with heated drive and hot delivery to meld The Final Countdown into a unique portrait of propulsive prog and a worthy addition to any hard rock collection.

If Brad Paisley signaled a tentative stylistic retreat via the title of 2011's This Is Country Music, the name of its 2013 sequel, Wheelhouse, is a fake-out. By no means is he returning to familiar territory here; he's stepping far outside his "Southern Comfort Zone," as Paisley puts it on the record's first single. There, he admits how he misses his Tennessee home but he's seen the ways he's grown and never would have seen the world without leaving what he already knew, a kind of self-evident truth that passes for a major revelation in the polarized world of 2013, where residents of both red and blue states are very happy within the confines of their county.

2013 collection. The late 60s were a time of incredible change in black American Music. The World Needs Changing reflects the growing confidence of black music in a decade of change. Soul, jazz and funk was a mirror onto the black urban world, and represented a growing confidence and sophistication. Records like Lonnie Liston Smith's 'Expansions' (presented here in it's rare 7 inch version) or Leon Thomas' 'Just in Time to See the Sun' show Jazz musicians reaching for the discos without losing their spiritual self. Gil Scott Heron, Esther Marrow, Darrow Fletcher and our super rare title track show the political struggle continued to bubble away. The majority of the music made at the time was still aimed firmly at the feet, and there are rare collectors items by the Original Soul Patrol, Ceaser 830, club classics by the Willard Posey Reunion and Little Eva Harris whose medley of 'Get Ready/ Uptight' has been massive in London for a couple of years now. At the age of 29 Hasse was on his first visit to Italy when he wrote 'La Contadina' in Naples. The music of the intermezzo, which sparkles with wit and temperament, enjoyed such a great success that a total of 38 productions in major European opera houses can be documented between 1728 and 1769. 'La Contadina' was one of the hits of the 18th century.

Since youth was youth and fashion was fashion, the dance floors of the Western world have periodically been swept by dance rages. Prior to World War I, Irene and Vernon Castle popularized a variety of dances, notably the Fox Trot and a number of animal dances. The 1920s saw huge popularity for the Charleston, Blackbottom, and Lindy, and in the late 1930s the rage began for wild jitterbugging to swing bands. But none of these dance crazes could match the early 1960s for their sheer variety of dance fads: there was a veritable explosion of all kinds of rock n roll and rhythm and blues dances and dance records, all emerging out of the popularity of the Twist. This survey covers some of the most distinctive and entertaining dances of that era up to the dance-crazed peak of 1962. Part of the History of Soul series, the accompanying illustrated booklet is written by Robert Pruter, acclaimed author of Chicago Soul, so get reading and get dancing!

Tom Jans began his career as a partner of Mimi Fariña's in the late '60s, spent a fair chunk of the '70s gunning for a soft rock crossover hit, then died under mysterious circumstances in 1984, two years after recording what wound up as his final album. In the process, he built up a strong body of work, highlighted by "Loving Arms," a song turned into a hit by Dobie Gray and covered frequently by country and R&B singers including Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell, Etta James, and Kenny Rogers.

This 4 CD set tells the story of music and people who moved from one corner of the US to another - namely the southerners who relocated to the West Coast in the 30s and 40s, bringing country music along with them. On the way they created not only new music but films glorifying the cowboy lifestyle and a new record company (Capitol) sprang up to put out all the songs. Artists such as Tennessee Ernie Ford and Cliffie Stone epitomised the trend and the tracks collected together on this set, along with the authoritative liner notes tell the story of the great move west and of a time before country automatically meant Nashville.

This is our fourth CD containing compositions by Alessandro Scarlatti (1660–1725) that were chiefly meant for the harpsichord and performed on it. The project stemmed, in a natural, almost parallel fashion, from the programme for the study and publication of the vast corpus of manuscript sources (no less than 25) of Alessandro Scarlatti’s pieces for keyboard instruments that was started by us more than ten years ago: the publication of his Opera Omnia per strumento a tastiera by the publisher Ut Orpheus Edizioni of Bologna (edited by Andrea Macinanti and Francesco Tasini) began in 2000 and was completed in 2012 with the printing of the sixth and last volume.

Before their work on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack made the Bee Gees disco stars, their mid-'60s material found the Gibb brothers already a few years into what would be an astonishingly long and successful career and working on more baroque, Beatlesque radio pop. While international fame met the Bee Gees with their somewhat mistitled 1967 album Bee Gees' 1st, the brothers had actually already recorded multiple records that only ever saw release in Australia for the Festival label. Morning of My Life: Best of 1965-1966 collects 24 standout tracks from early Festival recordings, none of which made it too far out of Australia. These early compositions find the band ranging from gentle folk-tinged numbers like "Butterfly" and "In the Morning (Of My Life)" to garage rockers like "I Want Home." For completists, Festival Album Collection: 1965-1967 repackages these early lost pop platters in their entirety, including all the songs from The Bee Gees Sing & Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs, Spicks and Specks, and Turn Around Look at Us.~Morning of My Life: Best of 1965-1966 Review by Fred Thomas

Pink Floyd Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the '70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after decade, and its longevity makes sense.

New release Canta la Serenissima includes the most divine music from the Republic of Venice, the Serenìsima Repùblica Vèneta, La Serenissima. Saint Mark’s Cathedral was one of the main employers of Venetian musicians and also a place of musical reforms in the 16th and 17th centuries. Composers featured on the disc include Claudio Monteverdi, the most famous maestro di cappella of all times at Saint Mark’s, Alessandro Grandi (1586–1630), who was a master of sacred monody, Dario Castello (c. 1590–c. 1658), who was a leader of a wind ensemble from 1621 at Saint Mark’s and Biagio Marini (1594–1663), who was a violinist from 1615 at Saint Mark’s. CD includes also works composed for the city of Venice’s patron saint Virgin Mary. Vocal works are performed skillfully by soprano Kajsa Dahlbäck.
