With Convergence, his second solo album, Swedish-born bassist Björn Meyer further develops music on the blueprint established with his recording Provenance (2017), making use of the technical potential of the bass guitar to establish striking sonorities and grained textures while also being acutely aware of the acoustic space in which his sounds emerge. In its review of Björn’s previous solo statement, London Jazz News found the bassist demonstrating “that melodic high-jinks and emotional intensity aren’t just for those who inhabit the treble stave. Meyer’s bass sings.” Here the bass player’s atmospheric explorations conjure images in the mind. His technical innovations appear expanded in a programme of songful quality. In brief it feels complete in itself, more than a document of instrumental prowess. Convergence was recorded in September 2024, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

After composing music for the theatre production Kniven i ilden, presented by Riksteatret and Kvääniteatteri, the world of Ingeborg Arvola’s novel Kniven i ilden continued to resonate deeply within me. The story, its landscapes, and its inner strength gathered in my imagination and gradually transformed into music. The dedication of the actors, director Cecilie Mosli, and the entire crew to sharing knowledge about Kven culture has been profoundly inspiring. In addition, I have had stimulating collaborations with all the musicians in the Kaipu project, presented by Nordnorsk Jazzsenter, as well as the visual project Kaipu Kotia, together with visual artist Eili Bråstad.

The first ECM leader date for Shai Maestro (following his label debut with Theo Bleckmann on Elegy) features the gifted pianist fronting his superlative trio with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder, and also playing alone. A solo interpretation of Matti Caspis My Second Childhood opens the curtain on a program of characteristically thoughtful Maestro originals, each one with a story to tell. Hearing the Shai Maestro Trio is like awakening to a new world, All About Jazz has suggested. Expressions of joy, introspective thoughts and heightened intensity all come to the fore. Maestros differentiated touch is special; he can convey a range of fleeting emotions in a single phrase. A deconstruction of These Foolish Things, the albums sole standard, serves as a prelude to What Else Needs To Happen , a somber meditation on inner city violence and its aftermath. The Dream Thief was recorded at Luganos Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in April 2018, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Originally released in 1985 on Manhattan/EMI and reissued by One Way Records in 1996 with a bonus track, Cielo e Terra ("Heaven and Earth") stands as one of Al Di Meola's most poetic, introspective, and atmospheric solo recordings. Stepping away from the blistering electric fusion of Return to Forever and his early solo albums, Di Meola explores pristine acoustic soundscapes through classical nylon-string guitars, Ovation acoustics, and the groundbreaking Roland Synclavier guitar system. Accompanied sparsely by Brazilian percussion legend Airto Moreira, the album balances delicate acoustic virtuosity with sweeping orchestral guitar-synth textures. The 1996 reissue adds "Traces (Of A Tear)," a rare full-band arrangement featuring Phil Markowitz, Chip Jackson, and Danny Gottlieb originally recorded during the concurrent Soaring Through a Dream sessions.

Recorded at Barigozzi Studio in Milan in July 1989 and released by Black Saint in 1992, Up and Down captures an intimate, highly adventurous session led by tenor/soprano saxophonist Chico Freeman and pianist Mal Waldron, featuring acclaimed Italian jazz vocalist Tiziana Ghiglioni on select tracks. Blending Waldron's signature dark, vamp-heavy piano chords with Freeman's fiery multiphonics and lyricism, the album traverses sweeping duo improvisations, delicate balladic modal landscapes, and expansive post-bop workouts. Highlights include the massive 15-minute opening dialogue Battleground, a haunting rendition of the standard My One and Only Love (erroneously titled My One and Only One on initial tracklists), and the energetic 11-minute title track.

“This is the chill-out as a state of grace, and it can go as deep as you like. Sublime,” wrote the Independent on Sunday of the Gustavsen’s trio’s Being There, released in 2007. Over the last decade Tord has explored other ensemble forms and formats, but on The Other Side – recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in January 2018 – he opens a new chapter in his piano trio story, with faithful drummer Jarle Vespestad, and excellent new bassist Sigurd Hole. Hole’s approach to his instrument, drawing on folk influences as well as modern jazz, is ideally suited to Gustavsen’s slowly-developing, deeply melodic pieces. The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, is issued on the eve of a major tour.

The “Paramount” in Joe Lovano’s new quartet can be interpreted as a statement of intent. “I feel like at this point I’m on the rise,” Joe says, seemingly unaware of the decades of experience and several dozens of leader-recordings under his belt. “We’ve arrived at this unique place with this quartet – It’s very special. It’s a new thing. And those cats, they play with a real global awareness.” The “cats” in question are guitarist Julian Lage, Asante Santi Debriano on bass and drummer Will Calhoun (otherwise known for his part in the American rock group Living Color) – all players who help shape a striking, adventurous new chapter in Joe Lovano’s expansive oeuvre on Paramount Quartet.
