Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide by Markus Raffel , Christian E. Willert , Steve T. Wereley , Jürgen Kompenhans
    English | PDF (True) | 2007 | 460 Pages | ISBN : 3642431666 | 55.4 MB

The development of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), a measurement technique, which allows for capturing velocity information of whole ?ow ?elds in fractions of a second, has begun in the eighties of the last century. In 1998, when this book has been published ?rstly, the PIV technique emerged from laboratories to applications in fundamental and industrial research, in par- lel to the transition from photo-graphicalto video recording techniques. Thus this book, whose objective was and is to serve as a practical guide to the PIV technique, found strong interest within the increasing group of users. The early progress made with the PIV technique might best be char- terized by the experience gained during our aerodynamic research at DLR (Deutsches Zentrum fur ¨ Luft- und Raumfahrt) at that time. The ?rst app- cations of PIV outside the laboratory, in wind tunnels, as performed in the mid-eighties were characterized by the following time scales: time required to set up the system and to obtain well focused photo-graphical PIV recordings was 2 to 3 days, time required to process the ?lm was 0. 5 to 1 day, time - quired to evaluate a single photo-graphicalPIV recording by means of optical evaluation methods was 24 to 48 hours. When the ?rst edition of this book was published in 1998, with electronic cameras and computers, it was pos- ble to focus on-line, to capture several recordings per second, and to evaluate a digital recording within seconds.

    Magnetoviscous Effects in Ferrofluids

Magnetoviscous Effects in Ferrofluids by Stefan Odenbach
    English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 155 Pages | ISBN : 3540430687 | 7.2 MB

Suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles or ferrofluids can be effectively controlled by magnetic fields, which opens up a fascinating field for basic research into fluid dynamics as well as a host of applications in engineering and medicine. The introductory chapter provides the reader with basic information on the structure, and magnetic and viscous properties of ferrofluids. The bulk of this monograph is based on the author's own research activity and deals with ferrohydrodynamics, especially with the magnetoviscous effects. In particular, the author studies in detail the interparticle interactions so far often neglected but of great importance in concentrated ferrofluids. The basic theory and the most recent experimental findings are presented, making the book interesting reading for physicists or engineers interested in smart materials.

Mechanical Microsensors by Miko Elwenspoek , Remco Wiegerink
    English | PDF | 2001 | 306 Pages | ISBN : 3540675825 | 24.3 MB

This book on mechanical microsensors is based on a course organized by the Swiss Foundation for Research in Microtechnology (FSRM) in Neuchatel, Swit zerland, and developed and taught by the authors. Support by FSRM is herewith gratefully acknowledged. This book attempts to serve two purposes. First it gives an overview on me chanical microsensors (sensors for pressure, force, acceleration, angular rate and fluid flow, realized by silicon micromachining). Second, it serves as a textbook for engineers to give them a comprehensive introduction on the basic design issues of these sensors. Engineers active in sensor design are usually educated either in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. These classical educa tional pro grams do not prepare the engineer for the challenging task of sensor design since sensors are instruments typically bridging the disciplines: one needs a rather deep understanding of both mechanics and electronics. Accordingly, the book contains discussion of the basic engineering sciences relevant to mechanical sensors, hopefully in a way that it is accessible for all colours of engineers. Engi rd th neering students in their 3 or 4 year should have enough knowledge to be able to follow the arguments presented in this book. In this sense, this book should be useful as textbook for students in courses on mechanical microsensors (as is CUf rently being done at the University ofTwente).

Modern Developments in Vacuum Electron Sources by Georg Gaertner
    English | EPUB | 2020 | 340 Pages | ISBN : 3030472906 | 118.7 MB

This book gives an overview of modern cathodes and electron emitters for vacuum tubes and vacuum electron devices in general. It covers the latest developments in field emission theory as well as new methods towards improving thermionic and cold cathodes. It addresses thermionic cathodes, such as oxide cathodes, impregnated and scandate cathodes, as well as photocathodes and field emitters – the latter comprising carbon nanotubes, graphene and Spindt-type emitter arrays. Despite the rise and fall of the once dominant types of vacuum tubes, such as radio valves and cathode ray tubes, cathodes are continually being improved upon as new applications with increased demands arise, for example in electron beam lithography, high-power and high-frequency microwave tubes, terahertz imaging and electron sources for accelerators. Written by 17 experts in the field, the book presents the latest developments in cathodes needed for these applications, discussing the state of the art and addressing future trends.

Atmosphere and Climate: Studies by Occultation Methods

Atmosphere and Climate: Studies by Occultation Methods by Ulrich Foelsche, Gottfried Kirchengast, Andrea Steiner
    English | PDF (True) | 2006 | 332 Pages | ISBN : 3540341161 | 12.9 MB

Since the early use of the occultation measurement principle for sounding pla- tary atmospheres and ionospheres, its exploitation in atmospheric remote sensing has seen tremendous advances. In this book we focus on sensors on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, which exploit solar, lunar, stellar, GNSS (Global Navi- tion Satellite Systems), and LEO-crosslink signals for observing the Earth's - mosphere and climate. The methods all share the key properties of self-calibration, high accuracy and vertical resolution, global coverage, and (if using radio signals) all-weather ca- bility. The atmospheric parameters obtained extend from the fundamental va- ables temperature, density, pressure and water vapor via trace gases, aerosols and cloud liquid water to ionospheric electron density. Occultation data are therefore of high value in a wide range of fields including climate monitoring and research, atmospheric physics and chemistry, operational meteorology, and ionospheric physics. nd The 2 International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate – OPAC-2 – was held September 13–17, 2004, in Graz, Austria. OPAC-2 aimed at providing a casual forum and stimulating atmosphere fertilizing scientific discourse, co-operation initiatives, and mutual learning and support amongst members of all different occultation communities. The workshop was attended by 40 participants from 12 different countries who actively contributed to a scientific programme of high quality and to an excellent workshop atmosphere, which was judged by the participants to have fully met the aims expressed.

Pixel Detectors: From Fundamentals to Applications by Leonardo Rossi , Peter Fischer , Tilman Rohe , Norbert Wermes
    English | PDF (True) | 2006 | 314 Pages | ISBN : 3540283323 | 5.4 MB

Pixel detectors are a particularly important class of particle and radiation detection devices. They have an extremely broad spectrum of applications, ranging from high-energy physics to the photo cameras of everyday life. This book is a general purpose introduction into the fundamental principles of pixel detector technology and semiconductor-based hybrid pixel devices. Although these devices were developed for high-energy ionizing particles and radiation beyond visible light, they are finding new applications in many other areas. This book will therefore benefit all scientists and engineers working in any laboratory involved in developing or using particle detection.

Flying safely in aircraft implies the use of navigation instruments. Among them, the magnetic compass is still a first choice for orientation and it is compulsory in all aircraft. In our increasingly sophisticated but fragile world of global navigation systems and gyroscopic sensors, the compass is especially useful as a back-up: it is highly reliable and likely to survive in harsh electromagnetic aggressions or when all power supplies fail.

Beam Instrumentation and Diagnostics by Peter Strehl
    English | PDF | 2006 | 438 Pages | ISBN : 3540264019 | 13.8 MB

This book summarizes the experience of many years of teamwork with my group, the beam diagnostics group of GSI. For a long time the group was also responsible for operating the machines and application programming. In my opinion, this connection was very e?cient: ?rst, because a beam diagnostic system has to place powerful tools at the operators’ disposal; second, because data evaluation and presentation of results for machine operation demand application programs which can be handled not only by skilled experts. On the other hand, accelerator developments and improvements as well as commissioning of new machines by specialists require more complex measu- ments than those for routine machine operation. A modern beam diagnostic system, including the software tools, has to cover these demands, too. Therefore, this book should motivate physicists, constructors, electronic engineers, and computer experts to work together during the design and daily use of a beam diagnostic system. This book aims to give them ideas and tools for their work. I would not have been able to write this book without a good education in physics and many discussions with competent leaders, mentors, and c- leagues. After working about 40 years in teams on accelerators, there are so many people I have to thank that it is impossible to mention them all by name here.

Thermoluminescence (TL) is a well-established technique widely used in do- metric and dating applications. Although several excellent reference books exist which document both the t- oretical and experimental aspects of TL, there is a general lack of books that deal withspeci?cnumericalandpracticalaspectsofanalyzingTLdata. Manytimesthe practicaldetailsofanalyzingnumericalTLglowcurvesandofapplyingtheoretical models are dif?cult to ?nd in the published literature. The purpose of this book is to provide a practical guide for both established researchers and for new graduate students entering the ?eld of TL and is intended to be used in conjunction with and as a practical supplement of standard textbooks in the ?eld. Chapter1 lays the mathematical ground work for subsequent chapters by preseing the fundamental mathematical expressions most comm only used for analyzing experimental TL data.
