The transcendent glory of Handel's beloved classic Messiah is taken to new heights on Sir Andrew Davis’s majestic, must-hear rendition, recorded live in December 2015. Davis and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra make use of all the colours available from the modern orchestra to underline the mood and meaning of the individual movements, sung here by an acclaimed cast of soloists. Without detracting from the innate power of the original, the conductor’s score calls for moments of drama, pathos and even, sometimes, whimsy. It is supported by substantial brass and woodwind forces and several percussion instruments, including marimba! As Davis explains in a very personal booklet note, he brought immense dedication to what is probably the most famous piece of British sacred music ever composed, this version being one which he has conducted live only a few times.

"Everything I have done instrumentally stems from the enormous respect, even awe, which I feel towards this supreme masterpiece."
- Sir Andrew Davis

"Five Stars … a remarkable choral achievement."
- BBC Music Magazine

"… tenor Andrew Staples and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth De Shong are both superb, dramatically alert and technically fluent. John Relyea is compelling, too … (the orchestra does) a terrific job realizing Davis’s flights of fancy. …"
- Gramophone
