The Budapest Festival Orchestra was founded in 1983 by Iván Fischer and the late pianist and conductor Zoltán Kocsis. It has quickly become one of the leading orchestras in the world. Thanks to its virtuoso members, hand-picked young musicians, it stands out in terms of sound beauty and ensemble playing. The City of Budapest and the Hungarian Ministry of Culture have supported the orchestra from the very beginning. It quickly made a name for itself with top-class conductors and soloists as well as through numerous recordings and international tours.

Like István Kertész and Claudio Abbado in their respective complete recordings, Iván Fischer complements his recording of Symphony No. 3 with a serenade. The two Serenades, the first orchestral works of the young Brahms, show a very stylish approach, in which wind instruments are preferably used in an often pastoral atmosphere with folk accents. The first is written for large orchestra, while the Second Serenade presented on this album, dedicated to Clara Schumann, was set for winds and low strings.

The young Brahms ' great closeness to the Schumann couple is clearly evident in the opening theme of the 3rd Symphony, which sounds like a slightly modified echo of the beginning of Robert Schumann's "Rhenish" Symphony, as only a few commentators point out. Iván Fischer offers a rather melancholic reading of the 3rd Symphony, especially the Poco allegretto, which became popular through film and singing, especially with Yves Montand and Serge Gainsbourg. The concluding allegro, on the other hand, rages in joyful tumult and unreserved enthusiasm before dissolving into thin air, because this magnificent symphony closes in a disconcerting pianissimo that is very unusual for romantic symphonies.

This recording is the conclusion of a complete recording of Brahms ' symphonic work by Iván Fischer and the Hungarian musicians, whose artistic director he has been since their foundation in 1983. A fascinating series thanks to the golden timbres and the Austro-Hungarian style that fits perfectly with Brahms' music.
