Homage to the cello legend: A new compilation of Jacqueline du Pré's favourite pieces.

"She was clearly born to play the cello," the New York Times wrote about Jacqueline Du Pré in 1967. Only five years later, her career was tragically ended by an illness. This album is a valuable souvenir of the "perfect balance between youth and maturity" that Du Pré's teacher William Pleeth saw in her playing: "She approached every new experience with spontaneous joy and enthusiasm.“ The album offers a vivid experience of her art in concert, not least her legendary Elgar, and includes recordings remastered at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

The tragedy of du Pré's short career is still present in the memory of the public and can be summarized here. She was born on January 26, 1945 in Oxford into a middle-class family in which music played an important role: her mother was an excellent pianist and a gifted teacher. The French-sounding name comes from her father's ancestors, who came from the Channel Islands. Shortly before her fifth birthday, when she was already showing musical talent, she heard the sound of a cello on the radio and her life path was outlined. She studied at the London Cello School of Herbert Walenn and at the age of ten became a pupil of William Pleeth, who had himself studied with Julius Klengel. Pleeth played with a lot of casual body movements and passed this trait on to du Pré, whose complete physical dedication to playing made her popular with the audience. She made her successful debut in London in 1961, studied with Casals in Switzerland, Tortelier in Paris and Rostropovich in Moscow with varying success – one wonders what else these musicians of such a gifted nature could teach – and gradually consolidated her reputation in her homeland. She started recording for EMI in 1962 and was already a star in 1965 when her famous recording of the Elgar Concert was made. That year she made her debut in America and married the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim in 1967.

In July 1971, when she was supposed to be at the peak of her career, she began to suffer from a mysterious illness that had already temporarily affected her game. Finally, multiple sclerosis was diagnosed, and after a series of relapses and remissions typical of this disease, she retired from concert life in 1973. Her health began to deteriorate and she died in London on 19 October 1987.
