The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross: A Challenge - It was indeed a wager this commission offered to Haydn by a canon of Cadiz on the occasion of Good Friday 6 April 1787 for the Oratory of La Santa Cueva ( e Holy Cave) in that town: to compose seven adagios corresponding to the last seven words of Christ on the cross. When Haydn received the request he happened to be with the abbé Stadler and the com- poser told him of his perplexity as to how to realize such a work, “not really knowing how to write with enough variety seven adagios in succession…” e challenge was accepted thanks to his exceptional genius. is first version for orchestra was to find considerable success and was for the composer “the nest of all my works”.

The rest is history: encouraged by this reception, Haydn in that same year transcribed the orchestral version for string quartet, and this version was also first performed in 1787 at the Schlosskirche in Vienna, its reception no less enthusiastic and to this day it is the most widely performed of the three versions Haydn wrote. e last was performed in Vienna at the Schwarzenberg Palace on 26 March 1796 as an oratorio for soloists and chorus with the same orchestral base. Another transformation was effected in 1787, this time for pianoforte, by an unknown musician, the composer giving it his seal of approval after making a few corrections. It too was en- graved by Artaria that same year. According to Haydn’s wish, the published score of the orchestral and quartet versions included, before each sonata, the corresponding biblical text. …
