American jazz musicians Hank Jones, Slide Hampton, Andy McKee and Lewis Nash collaborate with Japanese tenor sax player Satoru Oda on this set recorded during a tour of Japan.

Unless one can read the Japanese liner notes to this Venus release, it is difficult to share much information about tenor saxophonist Satoru Oda, though he's obviously a veteran tenor saxophonist who must be familiar to Japanese jazz consumers. But he could have hardly recruited a better group of visitors to record with him in his native land than Hank Jones and Slide Hampton, with bassist Andy McKee and drummer Lewis Nash to boot. Oda isn't exactly a frighteningly original soloist though he's at least able to swing; but Hampton's trombone solos are far more interesting. Jones, as always, can provide flawless backgrounds for any musician, while his solos are of high quality as well. The program draws from a mix of standards with bop and cool favorites. Hampton's humorous licks in the snappy "Scrapple from the Apple" and the pianist's solo in his original loping ballad "AK300" are especially noteworthy.
