    Il a fallu des milliards d'années pour que l'Europe se forme, sous l'action de plaques tectoniques en perpétuel mouvement. En compagnie du globe-trotter Antoine de Maximy, nous découvrons cette histoire et son actualité - car le continent continue d'évoluer -, inscrites dans les plis et creux de la terre. Le périple débute en Sicile, à Realmonte, où des dépôts de sel culminant jusqu'à 1 500 mètres témoignent d'un événement survenu il y a six millions d'années. À cette époque, le continent africain s'avance vers l'Europe, fermant le détroit de Gibraltar. La Méditerranée s'assèche, laissant ces monticules salins, avant de se remplir de nouveau, 700 000 ans plus tard… La plupart des éruptions volcaniques, séismes ou raz-de-marée qu'a connus l'Europe s'expliquent d'ailleurs par les chocs entre les plaques africaine et européenne.

    A l’occasion du 70ème anniversaire de la bataille de Bir Hakeim (27 mai-10 juin 1942), ce film donne la parole à des vétérans de ce fait d’armes. Ils avaient 20 ans et même aux pires moments du siège, ne doutaient pas de leur engagement. Soixante-dix-ans plus tard, ils racontent avec précision et émotion ce qui fut avant tout une formidable aventure humaine. D’abord un film de témoignage à la première personne, le documentaire est illustré d’archives, de très nombreuses photographies authentiques du siège et de séquences de fictions, pour replacer la bataille dans son contexte historique. Nous retournerons à Bir Hakeim, sur les lieux mêmes de la bataille, accompagnés de Jean-Mathieu Boris, l’un de nos témoins. Le film s’ouvre alors qu’il parcourt le site à la recherche de son trou et que remontent les souvenirs…
