The main intention of this book is to give an impression of the state of the art in energy-aware task-scheduling-related issues for very dynamic emb- ded real-time processing applications. The material is based on research at IMEC in this area in the period 1999–2006, with a very extensive state– the-art overview. It can be viewed as a follow-up of the earlier “Modeling, veri?cation and exploration of task-level concurrency in real-time embedded systems” book [234] that was published in 1999 based on the task-level m- eling work at IMEC. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements, the cost-sensitivity and the dynamic characteristics of our target domain, we have again adopted a target architecture style (i. e. , heterogeneous mul- processor) and a systematic methodology to make the exploration and op- mization of such systems feasible. But this time our focus is mainly on p- viding practical work ?ow out of the (abstract) general ?ow from previous book and also the relevant scheduling techniques for each step of this ?ow. Our approach is very heavily application-driven which is illustrated by several realistic demonstrators. Moreover, the book addresses only the steps above the traditional real-time operating systems (RTOS), which are mainly focused on correct solutions for dispatching tasks. Our methodology is nearly fully independent of the implementations in the RTOS so it is va- able for the realization on those existing embedded systems where legacy applications and underlying RTOS have been developed.

Design for Manufacturability and Yield for Nano-Scale CMOS walks the reader through all the aspects of manufacturability and yield in a nano-CMOS process and how to address each aspect at the proper design step starting with the design and layout of standard cells and how to yield-grade libraries for critical area and lithography artifacts through place and route, CMP model based simulation and dummy-fill insertion, mask planning, simulation and manufacturing, and through statistical design and statistical timing closure of the design. It alerts the designer to the pitfalls to watch for and to the good practices that can enhance a design’s manufacturability and yield. This book is a must read book the serious practicing IC designer and an excellent primer for any graduate student intent on having a career in IC design or in EDA tool development.

"Modelling and Analysis of Hybrid Supervisory Systems" introduces a modelling formalism that merges Petri nets, differential equation systems and object-oriented methods; a formalism that is adequate for modelling complex and large-scale systems. To guide the designer and conduct hybrid modelling, the book describes a method that starts from the requirements of a supervisory system and results in a proposal for such a system. The method is mainly based on UML diagrams, well-known tools in both academia and industry. In order to ensure that the supervisory system will behave as expected, a validation procedure that allows verification of the formal properties of the hybrid model is presented.

In this book, we are concerned with studying the co-design methodology, in general, and how to determine the more suitable interface mechanism in a co-design system, in particular. This will be based on the characteristics of the application and those of the target architecture of the system. We provide guidelines to support the designer's choice of the interface mechanism.

During the 1980s and early 1990s there was signi?cant work in the design and implementation of hardware neurocomputers. Nevertheless, most of these efforts may be judged to have been unsuccessful: at no time have have ha- ware neurocomputers been in wide use. This lack of success may be largely attributed to the fact that earlier work was almost entirely aimed at developing custom neurocomputers, based on ASIC technology, but for such niche - eas this technology was never suf?ciently developed or competitive enough to justify large-scale adoption. On the other hand, gate-arrays of the period m- tioned were never large enough nor fast enough for serious arti?cial-neur- network (ANN) applications. But technology has now improved: the capacity and performance of current FPGAs are such that they present a much more realistic alternative. Consequently neurocomputers based on FPGAs are now a much more practical proposition than they have been in the past. This book summarizes some work towards this goal and consists of 12 papers that were selected, after review, from a number of submissions. The book is nominally divided into three parts: Chapters 1 through 4 deal with foundational issues; Chapters 5 through 11 deal with a variety of implementations; and Chapter 12 looks at the lessons learned from a large-scale project and also reconsiders design issues in light of current and future technology.
