Analytical and Computational Methods of Advanced Engineering Mathematics

Analytical and Computational Methods of Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Grant B. Gustafson , Calvin H. Wilcox
English | PDF (True) | 1998 | 754 Pages | ISBN : 0387982655 | 41 MB

(NOTES)This text focuses on the topics which are an essential part of the engineering mathematics course:ordinary differential equations, vector calculus, linear algebra and partial differential equations. Advantages over competing texts: 1. The text has a large number of examples and problems - a typical section having 25 quality problems directly related to the text. 2. The authors use a practical engineering approach based upon solving equations. All ideas and definitions are introduced from this basic viewpoint, which allows engineers in their second year to understand concepts that would otherwise be impossibly abstract. Partial differential equations are introduced in an engineering and science context based upon modelling of physical problems. A strength of the manuscript is the vast number of applications to real-world problems, each treated completely and in sufficient depth to be self-contained. 3. Numerical analysis is introduced in the manuscript at a completely elementary calculus level. In fact, numerics are advertised as just an extension of the calculus and used generally as enrichment, to help communicate the role of mathematics in engineering applications. 4.The authors have used and updated the book as a course text over a 10 year period. 5. Modern outline, as contrasted to the outdated outline by Kreysig and Wylie. 6. This is now a one year course. The text is shorter and more readable than the current reference type manuals published all at around 1300-1500 pages.

The Scandal 'The Hermit Clad 1n Crane of Father Brown 'The Point of Feathers' in R. van Gulik's a Pin'. The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialisation and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches wich were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD" , "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

Modellistica Numerica per Problemi Differenziali by Alfio Quarteroni
Italiano | PDF (True) | 2008 | 565 Pages | ISBN : 8847008417 | 7.9 MB

Insurance, Biases, Discrimination and Fairness by Arthur Charpentier
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 491 Pages | ISBN : 3031497821 | 82.1 MB

This book offers an introduction to the technical foundations of discrimination and equity issues in insurance models, catering to undergraduates, postgraduates, and practitioners. It is a self-contained resource, accessible to those with a basic understanding of probability and statistics. Designed as both a reference guide and a means to develop fairer models, the book acknowledges the complexity and ambiguity surrounding the question of discrimination in insurance. In insurance, proposing differentiated premiums that accurately reflect policyholders' true risk—termed "actuarial fairness" or "legitimate discrimination"—is economically and ethically motivated. However, such segmentation can appear discriminatory from a legal perspective. By intertwining real-life examples with academic models, the book incorporates diverse perspectives from philosophy, social sciences, economics, mathematics, and computer science. Although discrimination has long been a subject of inquiry in economics and philosophy, it has gained renewed prominence in the context of "big data," with an abundance of proxy variables capturing sensitive attributes, and "artificial intelligence" or specifically "machine learning" techniques, which often involve less interpretable black box algorithms.

Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) left an indelible mark on the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, and geophysics. Despite his groundbreaking contributions, history has often overlooked his pivotal role. While two of the most famous achievements in physics are Newton’s theory of gravity and Einstein’s general theory of relativity, less well-known is that Huygens provided central elements to these theories. This book stands to correct that deficit. For example, we show how Huygens used symmetry arguments to derive conservation laws for momentum and for energy, and what Einstein later called the principle of equivalence to derive the formula for centrifugal force.
