After being leader of the #1 Female Group of All Time (to date a half century) and #1 American Vocal Group of the 60s, "Diana Ross & The Supremes", Diana completely flipped the script embracing the jazz of Billie Holiday, this soundtrack mesmerizes. Along with reviving interest in Holiday, Diana makes these classics her own. Honestly, by 1972, I was only vaguely familiar with Billie's music. I eventually grew to love and know the entire soundtrack. Coming off a stellar career with The Supremes, this album alone gave her a full new repertoire of material. By 1972, Diana had earned 3 Gold singles including the #1/Grammy nominated reworking of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". She no longer would have to rely on her massive body of work with The Supremes. Standouts includes the "Great American Songbook Standards", "My Man", "God Bless the Child" and "Good Morning Heartache". The movie and the soundtrack endured over a year on the charts and in movie theaters in pre-home video era. The album hit #1 for 2 weeks, certified multi-platinum and spawning 2 more jazz-influenced albums for Diana.
I would literally listen to all 4-sides of the vinyl album at least once a week for over a year.
It remains a defining album credited with reviving interest in Billie Holiday's career. It also remains an important segment of her live shows.
