The New Yorker called Hersch "…a poet of a pianist" and Downbeat has cited him as "…one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation." A superior soloist, accompanist, and interpreter of ballads, Fred Hersch has worked as a sideman with Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Toots Thielemans, Art Farmer, Jane Ira Bloom, Eddie Daniels, and Janis Siegel, in addition to leading his own groups. In addition, Hersch has recorded extensively as a leader and his three recordings for Chesky are reckoned to be amongst the best of his output.
