    Ce film est un road movie qui est devenu depuis l'emblème de la génération hippie des années 60. Il raconte l'échappée de deux jeunes motards, Wyatt (Peter Fonda) et Billy (Dennis Hopper), qui après avoir vendu une grosse quantité de drogue, décident d'aller à la Nouvelle-Orléans pour voir le Mardi gras. Durant leur traversée des États-Unis, les protagonistes vont rencontrer une communauté hippie et leur mode de vie. Participant illégalement à un défilé, ils se retrouvent rapidement en prison où ils rencontrent George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), celui-ci se joignant à eux par la suite. Les trois compères vont alors découvrir l'Amérique profonde, raciste et conservatrice, qui refuse l'évolution des années 60.

Laughton fait encore valoir ses talents de transformisme parvenant, au départ, à plaquer sur son visage un éternel petit sourire ironique et gardant constamment dans les yeux un petit éclat; au fil des ans, son regard se ternit peu à peu avant que le Charles finisse avec une tête de génie un peu foufou.
