    Pop Rock | 1cd | EAC Rip | Wv + Cue + Log | covers
    Spectrum Music, 544 625-2 | rec: 1968-1970 | 400Mb

This compilation does a good job of assembling the highlights of Mama Cass Elliot's catalog on the Dunhill Records label, 1968-70, which was her most commercially successful material. (She also charted in 1971 with the duo album Dave Mason & Cass Elliot on Blue Thumb Records and recorded three albums for RCA Victor Records, 1971-73, none of which made the charts.)

Pure blues, released in 1995, is an excellent introduction to the music of Ten Years after and their featured ex guitarist Alvin Lee. It’s a well put together compilation (Greatest Blues Hits) of their outstanding blues material, a cross section mind you and nowhere close to their total output of the blues. It really does showcase the bands musical talents, as well as provide Alvin with a vehicle in which to spread his wings and fly from one track to another with little resistance.

Three weeks after completing his meeting with Luiz BonfΓ‘ and only two days after the epochal Getz/Gilberto sessions, Stan Getz was back in the studio recording more bossa nova. Producer Creed Taylor was obviously striking while the iron was hot, getting in as many Brazilian sessions as he could, yet the quality of the music-making remained consistently marvelous.

When I first heard Korekyojinn’s music. I didn’t know what to think of it. But from the moment I bought their eighth album entitled, Fall Line from Wayside Music, I knew something special was about to land on my old portable CD player. And once the CD was in there, I couldn’t take it off. The band launched back seventeen years ago in Japan by Ruins Alone drummer Yoshida Tatsuya, who also has his own record label entitled Magaibutsu, in which my introduction to him was on the Romantic Warriors series in the second installment of the Rock In Opposition movement

By augmenting their sound with more synthesizers, electronics, and drum machines, the Cars' fourth release, Shake It Up, helped bridge their hard rock-based early work (1978's The Cars) with the futuristic-pop direction of 1984's Heartbeat City. The band's sound may have been evolving with each succeeding album, but Ric Ocasek was still writing compelling new wave compositions despite all the change, many of which would ultimately become rock & roll standards.

Rock 'til You Drop is the twentieth studio album by English rock band Status Quo and it is the bands last album to be released on the Vertigo label after nearly 20 years. Singer and lead-guitarist Francis Rossi himself produced the album.

In the first half of the '70s, Chess tried to relaunch Bo Diddley's career by making his material and production more in line with contemporary rock and soul trends, as it had with several other of the label's rock & roll and blues stars of the '50s and early '60s.

A posthumous greatest-hits collection (the first of way too many!), Revolution made it out in 1984, with just one new song, the abandoned 45 "Americanos," joining a straightforward run through the band's singles output.

Trombonist Bennie Green and trumpeter Art Farmer (with the assistance of pianist Cliff Smalls, bassist Addison Farmer and drummer Philly Joe Jones) challenge each other on these five selections which include an original apiece by the two horns and Smalls in addition to cheerful renditions of "My Blue Heaven" and "Gone with the Wind." The playing is not flawless on this recording but the soloists take chances and the music is often exciting.

There have been so many reissues and recompilations of the music that the Nice did for Immediate Records that it's difficult even for people who worked on those reissues to tell some of them apart without a scorecard. However, this set stands out, not only for its comprehensive nature but also for its sound quality, which is exceptional.

With a voice that sounds like a more mainstream version of the late jazz cult superstar Eva Cassidy and smoky raven-haired looks to rival a movie lot's worth of young ingΓ©nues, it's a bit of a surprise that Katie Melua has remained so unknown in the United States, despite the chart success the Eastern European-born songstress has achieved in her adopted home of the United Kingdom. It seems like she should be at least as popular as, say, Regina Spektor or Nellie McKay.

Much of the magic of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band returned on Workin' Band. Switching labels and signing to Warner Brothers, the group put a lot of effort into this disc and it shows. Perhaps the assistence of former Eagle Bernie Leadon helped gel their ideas, but by now, they had embraced country music with arms open wide, and the result was a fine effort from a veteran band.

The tune "East-West" from the second Paul Butterfield Blues Band album of the same name made music history. It is arguably the first extended rock solo, a fusing of blues-rock with Eastern scales and tone. Here is the root of psychedelic acid rock.
