Atmosphere and Climate: Studies by Occultation Methods by Ulrich Foelsche, Gottfried Kirchengast, Andrea Steiner
    English | PDF (True) | 2006 | 332 Pages | ISBN : 3540341161 | 12.9 MB

Since the early use of the occultation measurement principle for sounding pla- tary atmospheres and ionospheres, its exploitation in atmospheric remote sensing has seen tremendous advances. In this book we focus on sensors on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, which exploit solar, lunar, stellar, GNSS (Global Navi- tion Satellite Systems), and LEO-crosslink signals for observing the Earth's - mosphere and climate. The methods all share the key properties of self-calibration, high accuracy and vertical resolution, global coverage, and (if using radio signals) all-weather ca- bility. The atmospheric parameters obtained extend from the fundamental va- ables temperature, density, pressure and water vapor via trace gases, aerosols and cloud liquid water to ionospheric electron density. Occultation data are therefore of high value in a wide range of fields including climate monitoring and research, atmospheric physics and chemistry, operational meteorology, and ionospheric physics. nd The 2 International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate – OPAC-2 – was held September 13–17, 2004, in Graz, Austria. OPAC-2 aimed at providing a casual forum and stimulating atmosphere fertilizing scientific discourse, co-operation initiatives, and mutual learning and support amongst members of all different occultation communities. The workshop was attended by 40 participants from 12 different countries who actively contributed to a scientific programme of high quality and to an excellent workshop atmosphere, which was judged by the participants to have fully met the aims expressed.

Return to the Moon: Exploration, Enterprise, and Energy in the Human Settlement of Space

Return to the Moon: Exploration, Enterprise, and Energy in the Human Settlement of Space by Harrison H. Schmitt
    English | PDF (True) | 2006 | 346 Pages | ISBN : 0387242856 | 4.7 MB

Former NASA Astronaut Harrison Schmitt advocates a private, investor-based approach to returning humans to the Moon—to extract Helium 3 for energy production, to use the Moon as a platform for science and manufacturing, and to establish permanent human colonies there in a kind of stepping stone community on the way to deeper space. With governments playing a supporting role—just as they have in the development of modern commercial aeronautics and agricultural production—Schmitt believes that a fundamentally private enterprise is the only type of organization capable of sustaining such an effort and, eventually, even making it pay off.

Space Debris: Models and Risk Analysis

Space Debris: Models and Risk Analysis by Heiner Klinkrad
    English | PDF (True) | 2006 | 438 Pages | ISBN : 354025448X | 15.8 MB

In Space Debris Models and Risk Analysis the authors will provide the reader with a comprehensive background to understand the various sources of space debris, and to assess associated risks due to the current and future space debris environment. Apart from the non-trackable objects produced by historic on-orbit fragmentation events, several other sources of space debris will be outlined. Models will be described to allow the generation and propagation of the different debris families and permit the assessment of the associated collision risk on representative target orbits for present and future conditions. Using traffic models and possible mitigation practices, the future evolution of the space debris environment will be forecast. For large-size, trackable objects methods will be described for conjunction event predictions and related risk assessments. For hazardous re-entry objects, procedures will be outlined to enable the prediction of re-entry times and likely impact areas, to assess uncertainties in these factors, and to quantify the risk due to ground impact. Models will also be described for meteoroids, which prevail over space debris at small particle sizes.

This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the atmospheres of the giant gaseous planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The current theories of their formation are reviewed and their recently observed temperature, composition and cloud structures are contrasted and compared with simple thermodynamic, radiative transfer and dynamical models. The instruments and techniques that have been used to remotely measure their atmospheric properties are also reviewed, and the likely development of outer planet observations over the next two decades is outlined.

    English | PDF (True) | 2010 | 523 Pages | ISBN : 3642044573 | 13.8 MB

This book on recent investigations of the dynamics of celestial bodies in the solar and extra-Solar System is based on the elaborated lecture notes of a thematic school on the topic, held as a result of cooperation between the SYRTE Department of Paris Observatory and the section of astronomy of the Vienna University. Each chapter corresponds to a lecture of several hours given by its author(s). The book therefore represents a necessary and very precious document for teachers, students, and researchers in the ?eld. The ?rst two chapters by A. Lemaˆ ?tre and H. Skokos deal with standard topics of celestial mechanics: the ?rst one explains the basic principles of resonances in mechanics and their studies in the case of the Solar System. The differences between the various cases of resonance (mean motion, secular, etc. ) are emphasized together with resonant effects on celestial bodies moving around the Sun. The second one deals with approximative methods of describing chaos. These methods, some of them being classical, as the Lyapounov exponents, other ones being developed in the very recent past, are explained in full detail. The second one explains the basic principles of resonances in mechanics and their studies in the case of the Solar System. The differences between the various cases of resonance (mean motion, s- ular, etc. ) are emphasized together with resonant effects on celestial bodies moving around the Sun. The following three chapters by A. Cellino, by P. Robutel and J.

Astronomical Image and Data Analysis by Jean-Luc Starck , Fionn Murtagh
    English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 292 Pages | ISBN : N/A | 27.2 MB

When we consider the ever increasing amount of astronomical data available to us, we can well say that the needs of modern astronomy are growing by the day. Ever better observing facilities are in operation. The fusion of infor mation leading to the coordination of observations is of central importance. The methods described in this book can provide effective and efficient ripostes to many of these issues. Much progress has been made in recent years on the methodology front, in line with the rapid pace of evolution of our technological infrastructures. The central themes of this book are information and scale. The approach is astronomy-driven, starting with real problems and issues to be addressed. We then proceed to comprehensive theory, and implementations of demonstrated efficacy. The field is developing rapidly. There is little doubt that further important papers, and books, will follow in the future. Colleagues we would like to acknowledge include: Alexandre Aussem, Albert Bijaoui, Franc;ois Bonnarel, Jonathan G. Campbell, Ghada Jammal, Rene Gastaud, Pierre-Franc;ois Honore, Bruno Lopez, Mireille Louys, Clive Page, Eric Pantin, Philippe Querre, Victor Racine, Jerome Rodriguez, and Ivan Valtchanov.
