Surtùm is a Friulian word that can be translated as swamp or marshy meadow: a place both real and imagined, a temple of nature symbolizing life and death, transformation and rebirth.
Through song and word, Silverio offers prayers to this marshland: "I think of humidity as a sacred ‘place’ that is slowly disappearing.
Then this image comes to me: that of a song, a prayer that can settle on things like frost. Like dew. There is much moisture in this record: from the spring (Avenàl), the essence and soul of a waiting and a love flowing through the body of a tree, to the womb (Grim), a prayer to the water so that it may return to being the cradle of us all. There is also peat, murk, and breathlessness: earth, moss, a flame burning through the vapors, like the vespers of all this empty communication. The greed of the first (Prin) phenomenon, a song that keeps itself company by singing. A song that becomes a funeral wreath (Zoja), a song for those who are gone (Vàre), and for all those who suffer (Ghirbe). A song for this amputated world (Sorgjàl).
Surtùm is a journey of peace and grace, a slow descent into the dark nature of humankind; an album with which Massimo Silverio seeks to exorcise the violent and hateful times we are living in. In Silverio's music, the contemporary and the traditional melt in an unprecedented continuum where post-rock, trip-hop, and experimental meet folk sung in Cjarniel—a minority language from the Carnic Alps.
Written, arranged, and produced together with Manuel Volpe and Nicholas Remondino – already by his side in Hrudja – the record also features Mirko Cisilino (C’mon Tigre) on horn and tuba, Flavia Massimo (Teho Teardo) on cello and electronics, Benedetta Fabbri on violin, and Martin Mayers on the alphorn.
