Flugelhorn, double bass, and a drum kit played with brushes – the sound immediately puts you in the middle of it all, almost as if you were in the middle of it all. The closeness of trumpeter Quentin Ghomari's trio is immediately apparent. "The Peacocks," the classic by Jimmy Rowles, is a perfect vehicle for this. This applies equally to Ghomari's style, his way of expression. Whether flugelhorn or trumpet, the Frenchman develops smooth, melodic lines that reach the point of song. No eruptive outbursts, no wild flickering or harsh grinding. Yet his playing always contains power and emotional depth. The group name Ôtrium combines the words "trio" and "otium" (creative leisure). The subtitle suggests it: This is the second album by the formation, which has established itself as a working band. Ghomari comes from the circle of Papanosh, founded almost two decades ago in Rouen, his hometown in Normandy. He has also always been active in various other contexts. Bassist Yoni Zelnik, a native of Israel, is a member of the trio of pianist Yonathan Avishai, also a Frenchman by choice. Drummer Antoine Paganotti once played with the prog avant-garde band Magma, and has also played in groups with colleagues such as Baptiste Trotignon. Clarinetist and saxophonist César Poirier, whose group Vivarium Ghomari is also a member of, joins the band on four tracks. There are occasional bop references (including Parker's "Relaxin' at Camarillo"). Ghomari's own pieces mostly explore more open territory, culminating in the dynamically developed "Mamie in the Sky." Finest trio artistry.
