In free jazz, freedom is the main goal, but that doesn't mean you can play haphazardly. Our goal was to convey our message in an honest, deep, and systematic way – that's the most important thing for us and for the audience, too.”

On My Spare Time, Isao Suzuki steps out front on piccolo bass in a luminous set of standards and ballads, wrapping bossa, Ellington and songbook classics in a warm, conversational post‑bop glow with some of Japan’s finest players. Recorded in 1978 at Tokyo’s Onkio Haus studio, My Spare Time offers a beautifully unhurried portrait of Isao Suzuki away from the more hard‑driving, electric settings that made his name. Here the master bassist focuses on acoustic colour and song form, leading a small ensemble through a carefully chosen set of standards that range from Jobim’s “Wave” and Ellington’s “Solitude” to “A Child Is Born,” “Killing Me Softly with Her Song,” “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” “Good Morning Heartache” and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life.” Across these seven tunes, Suzuki favours his singing piccolo bass, using its higher register not as a novelty but as a lyrical frontline voice, while Nobuyoshi Ino’s acoustic bass anchors the harmonic floor.

True to the motto “more is more”, this band is a big one. The 17-piece ensemble led by saxophonist Gregor Schor performs compositions that have been specially tailored to the band and its musicians. The band’s size allows for a great deal of creative freedom. It is a vast toolbox containing everything from a small precision screwdriver to a sledgehammer. The name, the Greatest Common Multiple, stems from the idea that, through the diverse musicians, the content of the compositions is continually reinterpreted and embellished, thereby amplifying the music to its greatest possible potential. Thus, the work and the performers merge to form the Greatest Common Multiple.

CRAFTING QUINTET is a modern jazz group that presents original, rich and diverse music. The five performers have patiently built a creative bond over the course of their concerts and residencies. On the score, we will always find a strong melody that captures the attention or a mixture of bold timbres that shape the sound of the group. Originally released in 1978, "But Not for Me" is a masterpiece that fuses African polyrhythms with spiritual jazz, created by the singular jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi.

The Axiom Quartet in its current line-up began working together in the summer of 2015, after its members had been carefully selected and – with some persuasion – had won over Dejan Terzić’s then label CamJazz and its producer Ermanno Basso. Their first CD, ‘Prometheus’, was recorded in New York in February 2016. A lot has happened since the band first got together in 2015 – although strictly speaking, it wasn’t their first meeting: Dejan Terzić and Chris Speed had been working together since 2004 and had made recordings together. But it wasn’t until 2015 that they came together in the quartet line-up you hear today. Since then, Axiom has toured extensively throughout Europe and recorded another album, which was recorded in Udine, Italy, in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, and was finally released in 2022.

Luminosity is the latest addition to my evolving body of trio work. As I continue to move forward as both a pianist and composer, I’m looking more and more for directness in my music. In keeping my material somewhat simple, there’s room for complexity to emerge through the trio’s improvisations. This might be the first recording of mine that fully embraces that idea.
